Synopsis[]

Asta is overwhelmed with guilt after she, Harry, and D'arcy get rid of the dead body.

Plot[]

Protector[]

In the aftermath of Harry Vanderspeigle having been shot by Tanner Corrington and Asta, Sheriff Mike Thompson arrives in the woods to investigate. By this point, however, Harry, Asta and D'arcy have already hidden his body. They claim the gunshots were simply because of a wild raccoon. He says that they scared them, but tells them to enjoy the rest of the night. They then all wonder just what they're going to do.

Back in the cabin, Asta attempts to treat Harry's wound and Harry reflects on the nature of death and how his own people never really die because they are all part of the same eco-system. D'arcy enters to report that everyone is gone, not having noticed anything odd about the fact that Harry is still fully functioning despite having been shot. She asks if they want to talk about the dead guy and Asta tells her that he was the one who killed Sam Hodges, that she and Harry followed the clues to New York and found him. They discuss the situation with Corrington's dead body. Asta thinks they should tell the police, but Harry is against the idea. He explains that if the police get involved, then the people from Corrington's company, the Galvan/Powell Group, will come and try to finish what he started. D'arcy asks if this is why they didn't tell her what was going on, because they were trying to protect her. She says that now she's going to be the one to protect Asta.

Asta tells Harry that had the bullet just been a few inches lower he would have been dead because it would have hit his heart. She then wonders if this really would have been the case, or if he would have healed, but he tells her that had it hit his human heart, he would have died before he could heal. He thinks to himself that he does not like the feeling of having nearly died and decides to just put it aside.

Doctor once more[]

The three discuss the plan for disposing of Corrington's body. Having learned that he was staying at Copper Ridge, a sleazy motel on the edge of Patience, they decide to plant his body in the hot tub there, planting his gun on him to make him look shady. They also decide to plant Sam Hodges's medical records on him. Asta, however, points out that even if they think that he killed Sam, she still killed him. Harry, however, tells her that he has that dealt with too: Mayor Ben Hawthorne asked him to once again become the town doctor. He will accept and therefore he can fake the autopsy results. At the motel, D'arcy runs interference so that Harry and Asta can plant the body, which Judy Cooper then discovers.

Elsewhere, David Logan sits stunned in front of a stream, staring at the alien ball which saved his life after he was shot at and fell off a cliff. He hears dogs barking and starts running, only to encounter General McCallister. "This way," she tells him and he accuses her of setting him up, but she tells him that if she had done that, she would be with the men and dogs who are chasing them. Back in Patience, Sheriff Mike and Deputy Liv Baker go over their investigation into the Galvan/Powell Group. Harry arrives in the town hall and accepts Ben's offer to once again become the town doctor, and then Judy Cooper calls to report having found Corrington's body.

At the motel, Mayor Ben raises a fuss. He claims that the hot tub is actually over the county line into Jessup and therefore the murder is for Jessup to solve and not Patience, not wanting Patience to suffer further negative publicity. Sheriff Mike, annoyed, claims that as the Patience sheriff, he says it is a Patience crime scene. He is even more interested when he and Liv discover that the victim is Tanner Corrington, whose name was on the list they found in Sam Hodges's office. While they try to take charge, Mayor Ben puts it in a phone call to Jessup's sheriff's department under a false name, reporting the murder.

A Patience crime[]

In the Patience Health Clinic, Harry examines Gerard Hundemer, the man whom he had previously told to celebrate Christmas before June due to his declining health. Seeing the man reminds him uncomfortably of his own mortality as an alien in human form. The body of Tanner Corrington arrives and is delivered to exam one for the autopsy. Meanwhile, at the 59, Asta expresses her own despair to D'arcy, telling her she's never going to be normal again after having killed someone. D'arcy tells her that she's an innocent person who caught up in things because of a bad man. Meanwhile, Sheriff Mike and Deputy Liv continue their investigation when they are interrupted by the arrival of a Detective Lena Torres from Jessup, who tries to claim dominion over the case. Sheriff Mike argues vehemently against her being there, calling it a "Patience crime." Mike introduces himself to Lena Torres as "Big Black." She tells him that she'll loop him in if she needs any help, and stunned, he shouts after her, asking how she's going to loop him in on something he's already in on.

Harry meets with Mayor Ben, whom as a condition of having him again be the town doctor is again requiring him to give him therapy sessions. Harry tells him that he does not want to do and Ben mistakes it for a tactic, thinking that Harry is acting indifferent so that he doesn't seem like a therapist and he opens up more. Just then, his wife, Kate, enters the room and they end up getting frisky. Ben explains that they're going to try having the therapy session together, though things get weird when they start pouring out their feelings.

As the session ends, Harry notices a group of Jessup people taking away the body of Tanner Corrington. He asks what's going on and Ben tells him that the Jessup people are going to handle everything because the murder was in Jessup. Elsewhere, Deputy Liv phones the alien tracker, Peter Bach, telling him that there is alien activity in Patience. Sheriff Mike comes in, chastising her, but she tells him she's doing it on personal time and she's taking a bathroom break. She gets back a message telling her that the alien tracker is very busy and to check upcoming tour dates.

Nice things[]

Harry lays meat outside his cabin and makes alien noises, hoping to attract the humalien so that he can get the rest of Goliath's message. He gets a visit from Ben who has brought over some beers and wants to hang out. Despite Harry telling him to go, Ben makes his way into the cabin. Meanwhile, at Joe's Diner, D'arcy hangs out with her new boyfriend, Elliot, but he finds her oddly distracted. Dan tells her that Elliot waited for her there for three hours and that she should be careful because she hooked herself a real one this time. She apologizes to Elliot, telling him that some people feel like they don't deserve nice things and he's a nice thing. "You're a nice thing too," he tells her.

Back in the cabin, Ben is becoming increasingly drunk and Harry shouts at him not to pee on his couch. Ben asks him if he ever plays any drinking games and he suggests the following: that he call the police and tell him that he should do the autopsy and if he does, he wins. Ben tells him there's no way, that it's a Jessup murder, babbling about how he was once a model. Harry again tries to get him to agree to have the autopsy in Patience, but he tells him that unless the killer was somehow standing in Patience that it's a Jessup problem.

Harry thinks to himself that if Ben is not going to help him get the autopsy back then he will do it himself. He also continues to ruminate over having nearly died. He returns to Sheriff Mike who summons Detective Lena Torres. He tells Lena that they have a working theory, that the killer lined up the shot from within Patience and knocked Corrington into the hot tub. Sheriff Mike says that they can all agree the murder crosses county lines and Torres agrees that Harry has a good handle on things, telling him that he should take the autopsy and if his theory is right, they can all be partners.

The autopsy and other affairs[]

Having found a place of safety, General McCallister tells David Logan that she has a problem. She continues that there must be a mole in her organization, that nobody else knew about their meetup and nobody else could have told the sniper where to be. She congratulates him, saying he's the only one who can't be the mole. She asks if she can trust him and he replies that she of course can. She asks him if this is the case, then how come she found the alien ball under the floorboards last night after she drugged his food. They agree that they both can't trust each other and that they're on the same page.

Harry and Asta prepare to the autopsy. Harry lays out to Asta the various things he's already noticed about the body and how he's going to fudge them to get her off. As they continue, however, she starts breathing heavily and then stops. He tells her that they have not finished the autopsy, asking what is going on. She tells him that she can't do it, that she can't live with herself having killed a man. She tells him that she just wants to forget the whole thing and he tells her that it will be okay. She shouts that it won't, that it will never be okay again.

Harry thinks to himself that he can feel her pain as if it were inside him. He thinks that if she can just pretend it did not happen, she will feel better. Continuing this train of thought, he thinks that he can erase all of her memories of what happened and she will be happy again, that she will forget and everything will be okay. He places his hands on her head and removes her memory of killing Corrington and everything that has happened since. Outside Joe's Diner, Jay sits waiting Asta to pick her up for her birthday dinner, not realizing that Harry has erased Asta's memory of her promise to meet her there.
