Bridget, also known as the "Humalien" or the "alien baby," is the name given by Harry Vanderspeigle to a hybrid human/alien baby seen on the series Resident Alien.
In his human form as Bobby Smallwood, he is portrayed by Kesler Talbot. As an alien, he is puppeteered by Jeny Cassidy[1] and voiced by Andrea Geones. Geones is uncredited throughout the second season of Resident Alien, but receives a credit beginning in the third season.
Character overview[]
The humalien was born from egg created when the alien Goliath impregnated himself with the genetic tissue of the human Violinda Darvell. Upon doing so, Goliath fossilized in order to develop the egg. The creature that hatches from the egg appears fully alien, though Harry Vanderspeigle states that because of it being half-human it is in some way different and likely will develop human emotions in some fashion. Goliath inserts something of himself inside the humalien's mind in order to send Harry a message.
The humalien later wandered in the mines of Patience where "59 died to save one." There, he discovered the remains of a boy named Bobby Smallwood and used the residual DNA to assume the boy's form.
Sahar discovers the humalien as Bobby Smallwood and tries to hide him and raise him in order to keep him from Harry. The humalien, however, escapes. Harry then tries to kidnap Sahar in order to find the baby, only to discover that the two of them share the same goal and end up teaming up with her grudgingly. The two track the baby to a forest, only for it to be taken by a team of "Men in Black" lead by General McCallister.
Harry texts 911, attempting to report the news to his friend Asta Twelvetrees. Later, they are discussing the situation in Harry's cabin when Asta discovers a package sent to Harry by Violinda Darvell, Goliath's wife. Within, they discover a book of paintings and a note left by Goliath stating that he wanted his child to get to know him through his paintings. They discover within a painting of Harry attacking Asta's ex-husband, Jimmy, and Asta realizes that Goliath was Harry himself from the future.
Back at her blacksite, General McCallister receives a report from a subordinate who tells her that the first battery of tests on the boy have not revealed any alien DNA. She then begins discussing a second round of tests, but McCallister tells her not to bother, that she's going in. The subordinate says that she'll have the guards prepare the restraints, but McCallister tells her not to bother with this alien, that the boy isn't an alien. "None of them are," she despairs.
She enters the room, saying that she understands playing pranks as a kid and that he thought he'd dress up as a boy who disappeared 80 years ago. She demands, however, to know whose idea it was to pretend that he was an alien. She shouts at him to "cut the fake alien shit!" and he backs away, scared. She sits down with him, telling him that aliens are real, that she and her father saw them when she was a child. He grabs her head and experiences a memory of her and her father seeing an alien spaceship and her father being forced to jump to his death because of it. He releases his hand and his skin begins bubbling. McCallister stares in shock and awe as he takes on his alien form, then shudders.
With the help of Peter Bach, Harry manages to break into McCallister's secret black site facility in Wyoming, rescuing the alien baby and receiving the rest of Goliath's message. He learns from Goliath that their people have ceded the Earth to The Greys and that the Greys have been creating Grey/human hybrids that can blend in easily to Earth society. He also learns that Goliath killed General McCallister, but that he himself must not do this as McCallister's information and skills may be key to saving the Earth. Goliath also tells him that he is himself from the future, though Harry has already deduced this with Asta's help. Harry prepares himself to abandon the alien baby, having gotten what he needed, only to find that he cannot, that he has developed paternal feelings. He instead flees the facility. He is unable to save Peter from being killed by a Grey or hybrid (it is theorized this is a hybrid since the show showed him appearing human when the camera pans to show Peter the alien hunter point of view and the eye blinking that seem to be in-between Greys and humans) in the form of a human by the name of Joseph Rainier, but manages to save Peter's son, Robert Hutchins. He encounters McCallister, but following Goliath's instructions, does not kill her.
Harry returns home with the alien baby and Peter. He later is confronted by Joseph at Joe's Diner, who freezes time and gives him a message: that the Greys are willing to allow him to escape back to his home planet so long as he leaves the Earth peacefully and does not interfere with their plans. The offer is appealing to Harry, as he knows he has already failed once as Goliath. He makes ready to leave and take the alien baby with him. Robert, however, refuses his offer to come with.
As Harry is preparing to leave, he is approached by Sahar, who heard the news from her best friend, Max. She bids her goodbye to the alien baby, giving him a plush alien toy with a hijab in order to remember her by. She tells him that she got him healthy snacks, and warns him that eating birds is bad for his cholesterol. She bids him goodbye and he does the same, thanking her for helping him. She tells Harry that she didn't think she could ever raise a human/alien hybrid baby and that she's a different person because of him. When she learns that Harry is considering naming the baby "Chaz," she tells him that there is no way, that the baby is significant, extraordinary, the bridge between her people and his and that his name should reflect that.
Harry decides to name the baby "Bridget," based on Sahar's term of him being a "bridge." He then takes the baby with him to the capsule that the Greys have provided and prepares to set off, only to realize that he cannot abandon the Earth and his friends. He realizes that he no longer wants to eat his baby, as he had once considered, but he does want to keep it safe. He realizes that he is not Goliath and does not have to fail, and sends off the baby on his own to protect him. He then realizes that the baby's snacks were left behind and shouts after that he will eat them for him.
Bridget eventually returns to the Earth. He sets upon a trucker, kills and eats him, then uses his DNA to assume his form. He then enters a nearby diner, where the woman behind the counter asks what brings him to their neck of the woods. "I'm here to kill my father," he tells her.
Bridget returns to Harry's cabin, taking the form of Liza Vanderspeigle, the daughter of the human Harry Vanderspeigle whose identity Harry assumed. Believing him to actually be Liza, he tells him that it's not a good time for a visit, suggesting that he come back when it's warmer outside and they can throw a ball around. "So you want to send me away again?" he asks and Harry replies that he did not send him away, that he put him on a nice bus and even gave him an apple. Bridget starts throwing knives and Harry threatens to limit his screen-time. "There's something different about you," he realizes, then realizes the truth. "I like your new skin" he tells him, but he whacks him in the face. Harry compliments his strength, and the fact the was able to recreate Liza's clothing. He replies that he's the worst father ever and that he hates him. Harry asks if he wants to kill him, but he replies that he has something worse than death planned for him. When Harry asks what this is, he tells him that he'll see, then takes off.
Harry goes to Max, hoping to make use of his ability to see through alien disguises to find Bridget. Max, however, refuses point-blank, annoyed with Harry for being grounded after he took use his model caldera to use in a school science fair. He complains that Harry always uses him, then afterwards acts like he's not even alive. He runs off, but not before Harry takes back the taser he took from him. Later, Asta visits Harry, telling him that she heard he got banned from Mama Sap's Pizza. "This is what the little shit meant by worse than death," realizes Harry. When Asta asks what is going on, he tells her he has not been a strong enough parent.
Out searching for Bridget, Harry thinks to himself that he like his baby better when he was sweet and not murder-y, that he does not understand-- he gave him a good life with a freezing cold planet on which he could run and play and try to kill other children. Just then, Sahar shows up. Upon seeing her, he freaks out, believing her to be the alien baby in Sahar's form. He says that she can't be her, that she was sent away to girl's prison. She tells him that it was a gifted school and that she's back. He asks how he can know it's really her and after hearing her sarcasm, decides that it must be. She asks why he has the taser and he tells her he took it from Max because Bridget is back and acting out. She is delighted to hear this, telling him that she missed Bridget.
Harry brings Sahar to his cabin and places her in front of a fan, hoping that by spreading her scent it will attract Bridget back. Bridget does eventually reappear and happily leaps into Bridget's arms. She tells him that she really missed him, cuddling him and saying that he was scared, but that he's safe now. Just then, however, harry pulls out the taser and shocks Bridget, causing him to explode in a mass of blue goo. "You killed him!" shouts Sahar, saying that she's never had a child, but she knows that not killing it is the main thing. Harry, however, complains that Bridget was broken and didn't love him anymore, to which Sahar replies that it doesn't matter, that he is supposed to love Bridget. Harry argues that this isn't a good deal, but just then, one of the pieces of blue goo starts sliding and then takes on the form of Sheriff Mike Thompson. "Molecular regeneration," realizes Sahar, as more and more of the pieces start taking on the form of Harry's various friends and acquaintances, even the wife and daughter of the human Harry Vanderspeigle. Harry advises Sahar to run, holding up the taser and tellilng her that he has this.
Harry then begins a fierce battle against the various forms taken on by Bridget. Though they try to rush him, he uses the taser to explode them back to blue goo, one by one. Eventually, there is only one bit of DNA left for Bridget to absorb - a booger on the floor that turns out to have belonged to Max Hawthorne, Harry's former nemesis who is able to see through to his true alien form. Seeing him, he comments that he tried to kill him so many times, but he doesn't want to anymore. "So stick him in a pod and send him away!" shouts Bridget. Harry tells him he did it for him. "You did it for you," he argues. Harry tells him he had work to do, that the future of Earth depended on him. "I'm a baby, I needed you," he tells him, saying that he thought they were going together, that he needed his father. "I abandoned you," realizes Harry, thinking that it's just like how he was abandoned by his girlfriend, Heather. He tells Bridget that he's sorry. Bridget asks if this is because his girlfriend left him, but Harry realizes that he's feeling something he thought was gone forever when Heather left him. He tells Bridget that he loves him and Bridget, in the form of Max, leaps into his arms, then resumes his alien form.
Bridget joins Harry as he implements his plan to stop the Greys from desolating the Earth, transforming it into a world suitable only for them. Though the plan succeeds, the two of them are captured and locked away on the Greys' secret facility on the moon. Harry's form is taken over by a Mantid who returns to Earth with Asta Twelvetrees and D'arcy Bloom and who pretends that Bridget was killed during the mission.
