Synopsis[]

Harry and Asta find what they are looking for but not what they need as danger closes in.

Plot[]

The truth about Goliath[]

It is 33 years ago in the Tapajas National Forest in Brazil. A forest ranger is painting lettering on a sign when suddenly his horse is spooked and runs off. He chases after the horse and discovers a strange glowing blue vortex of energy. He reaches his hand inside, then withdraws it hurriedly, seemingly none the worse for wear. He backs up and an alien of the same species as Harry Vanderspeigle emerges from the vortex. He falls over and hits his head. The alien chitters, then reaches down and picks up the man's paintbrush.

In the present day, Harry Vanderspeigle continues tripping out on LSD in Times Square, still in his alien form. He reflects that he came to Earth to kill everyone, but now things are different. Back at the party, Asta Twelvetrees asks Violinda Darvell what makes her think that Harry's an alien. She tells her to come with her and leads her to a locked room marked "private." She tells Asta not to be nervous, that she knows who Harry is and why they're there. "How?" asks Asta and she says she recognizes Harry's energy, that Goliath learned to live there, but it was never natural. She says he lived with inner turmoil that you can see in his art.

Asta is worried by Violinda's use of the past tense, asking her to please tell her that Goliath is there. She pulls back a curtain, revealing a fossilized alien. "It's Goliath," she explains, stating that she and Goliath became each other's whole world, but it was his wish to connect with another of his kind. The radio signal was a personal invitation, but Goliath died six months ago. Asta says that it can't be, that she doesn't understand what's at stake. "I'm sorry, this is all there is," Violinda tells her. Asta calls Harry. "What happened, you are alien?" she asks. He explains about taking the LSD and she recognizes him as being in front of the New York City Public Library. She promises she'll be right there.

Harry and Asta sit together on a bench. Harry is now back in human form and covered in ice packs to help stabilize him. He tells her that he saw so many humans, that they're gross, but they have each other and this is their home. He says he wants to meet someone like him, to feel like he is home. "Yeah, about that..." Asta tells him, explaining that Goliath is dead. Harry reflects on this, saying that Goliath was dead as soon as he became more human than him. Meanwhile, back at the pizza place, Lisa Casper has brutally murdered the proprietor. She stops to grab a slice of pizza, then heads outside, where she sees Goliath's artwork. She recognizes the language on it as matching that from the spaceship and smiles, taking a photo with her smartphone.

Abigail's grief[]

D'arcy Bloom wakes in Max's bed, hugging a teddy bear. Downstairs, Ben kisses Kate, who is just returning from her trip. He asks how her mother was. He claims to have been spending his time alone, making frantic motions to D'arcy as she starts heading downstairs. D'arcy heads back upstairs and sneaks out the window, making sure to take the marijuana joint with her before she leaves. Downstairs, Kate notices a table out of place and Ben's "Live, Laugh, Love" sign. He says that she hates it, but she tries to play it off by saying that a lot of people have it. Despite this, he seems to sense that she really doesn't like it and, submissive as always, he takes it down.

Mike is next hanging up the sign at the sheriff's office, where he tells an entering Liv Baker that he was thinking of starting a donation jar for the coffee pots. She notices the sign and asks why he's putting there. He says he thought she might like it. He asks what she thinks, and she asks if she has to say she likes it for the donation Jar. She says she loves it. She asks if she can show him something. She shows him a video of a UFO in Patience. He tells her not to post it, saying that people already think Patience is a murder town and he doesn't want them thinking it's an alien town also. She says that she owes it to the world to share it and he tells her to change the headline to "Incredible UFO near Jessup."

Sheriff Mike Thompson enters, telling Mayor Ben to jab him in the arm. He explains that he went to see Dr. Smallwood because he cut himself and needed stitches, but she put his whole arm to sleep. He asks how he's supposed to work. Ben says it's a simple mistake, saying that Dr. Smallwood literally delivered him as a baby. "Didn't she literally deliver your parents too?" points out Deputy Liv. Ben says it's besides the point, but Mike says he needs to fire her. Deputy Liv says that she saw Smallwood for a sore throat and she diagnosed her with hysteria. Ben says that they're blowing it out of proportion and that he's getting the results from his yearly checkup and he's sure she'll be as spry as ever.

Harry stares at a Goliath mural of an octopus, saying he wanted to see this last one before he left. He says he didn't think he would miss 42 because he thought he was meeting alien family, but now they're both dead. He tells Asta he feels alone. Asta apologizes for his not getting to see family, asking what they're going to do now. Harry says Goliath was their last chance and now he'll be forced to talk to himself. He asks Asta if she thinks Goliath had an octopus friend too. She says that maybe he did, but she doesn't know how his mind worked, that the painting just could be random. Harry tells her that nothing his people do has purpose. She says it's really confusing, that Goliath brought them there for no reason. Harry thinks it's impossible. He asks if Goliath left anything for him. Asta says Violinda didn't mention anything and seemed like she was genuinely grieving. She says she could have told him that his people fossilize upon death, or die standing up. Harry seems surprising that Goliath was standing, saying they have to go. He races off. Two men pursue.

D'arcy Bloom enters Roy's Gym in Patience and stares at an old championship photo of herself. She begins a full workout with various pieces of equipment. Meanwhile, Sheriff Mike and Deputy Liv are outside Abigail Hodges house. A man is complaining that Abigail is profiting from her husband's murder, but Sheriff Mike tells him that she has every right to have a yard sale, that she's awaiting trial on charges. He tells the man to go away, then walks over to Abigail. She thanks him and he calls himself an impartial administrator of the law. She says that she's just going to box everything, since nobody wants to buy from a murderer. Sheriff Mike then attempts to purchase a hat, only for her to say that she can't let go of it because it reminds her too much of Sam. He then offers her $50 for a set of mystery novels that Sam once tried to give to him, only for Abigail to tell him to take them, that if Sam wanted him to have them, then he should. As he and Liv head back to the sheriff's car, Mike reflects to Liv that Abigail seems to be genuinely grieving, not somebody who killed her husband.

Babies everywhere[]

Back at the gym, D'arcy gets into an elliptical machine, but then flashes back to her dream-ending injury and balks. She goes over to the treadmills instead and sees Kate Hawthorne running on one of them. She joins her and Kate comments that he didn't know she worked out there. D'arcy quips that she took a "recovery day for about 15 years." The two get into a competition, each repeatedly turning up the dials on their machines. Kate later helps D'arcy train with barbells, discussing old college training. Kate says she thinks he overdid it, and D'arcy suggests they head over to the 59 for protein shakes. "You?" wonders Kate and D'arcy admits she's talking about beer, saying it has half a gram of protein in it.

Harry arrives at Violinda's place, seeing he needs to see Goliath. She tells him to stop, saying he needs to respect his privacy. Asta tells him he has to leave, but Harry is insistent, so Asta leads him to Goliath's body. Harry stares at his fossilized form, gasping. He then picks up a candlestick and shatters the body, over Violinda's protests. From it emerges a blue alien egg. Asta asks what it is. "It's our baby," explains Violinda. She tells Harry that he has to leave, that he's not taking her child. He says he could just rip her arms off and Asta tells him to stop it, asking Violinda to clarify just what she means. She says that Goliath used her genetic tissue to become pregnant and Harry says it's the reason Goliath contacted him. Just then, a voice calls out, asking if anyone is there. It's Lisa Casper. Violinda goes out, saying she'll take care of it. The two talk, Lisa claiming to be a desperate art collector. Meanwhile, Harry and Asta take a discrete look and Asta, seeing Lisa, has a flashback of holding a sketch of her that was drawn by Deputy Liv Baker. It's an excellent likeness. "Oh, shit," realizes Asta.

Back in Patience, D'arcy and Kate are at the 59 and D'arcy gives Kate a whiskey on the house. Kate thanks her, but upon taking a swig says it tastes like soap. D'arcy tells her it's a local brewery, but she says that she doesn't understand, that the last time this happened, she was pregnant with Max. "Congratulations," D'arcy tells her, saying they have to get champagne. Kate tells her she can't drink if she's pregnant. "I know," agrees D'arcy. Kate folds her hands, looking troubled. D'arcy asks what's wrong and Kate says she doesn't know how she feels about having another kid. "'Cause of Max," agrees D'arcy. Kate asks what she means, saying that having another kid means her entire life is put on hold again for 18 years. She says that Ben would be thrilled, though, causing D'arcy to chuckle. She asks if Ben really would be, causing Kate to question if he said something to her. "Why would he say anything to me?" asks D'arcy. She suggests Ben maybe changed his mind, but Kate says she knows her husband and he wants more kids. "You know your husband," agrees D'arcy.

Dr. Smallwood enters the room where Ben is waiting. He compliments her on her punctuality, saying she's a great doctor. She tells him she has bad news, that he has cancer in his colon, very aggressive. He looks troubled and just then, Ellen enters. "That's Mrs. Patel's chart," she explains, grabbing it from Dr. Smallwood's. She hands Smallwood Ben's chart, and she tells him that he has a vitamin D deficiency and to get some sun. "Don't tell Mrs. Patel if you see her. Yikes," comments Ellen. Ben tells Dr. Smallwood that she basically just told him he was dying. She says he had the wrong chart and it happens. "Should it?!" wonders Ben. "No," says Ellen. He tells Dr. Smallwood that he's going to have to ask her if she's considered taking an extended vacation. "He's trying to fire you," clarifies Ellen, saying she might kill someone if she kept working there. Dr. Smallwood asks Ben if this is true and he tells her that "it's not not true." She says he's a sweet boy for not wanting to tell her that, but Ellen isn't sweet at all, that it even looked like she enjoyed it. "I didn't not enjoy it," agrees Ellen. Dr. Smallwood leaves and Ben comments that now they officially have no doctor. Ellen brings over a file, saying that Dr. Vanderspeigle is their only real candidate. She calls him a great doctor but not much to look at - "a Patience six, which is a Denver four, which is a California one." Ben tells her that he's not sure if any of that is legal to say. He points out that Dr. Vanderspeigle has a birthday coming up. Ellen agrees that he could buy him a present and soften him up. "You've just moved up to a Patience three," she declares, walking out.

Ready or not[]

Back at the art studio, Violinda chats with Lisa, telling her she might try somewhere else, that she can't help her. Harry says she could just kill her, but Asta says to give her a minute, that she'll leave. Lisa asks Violinda if she knew Goliath, but Violinda tells her to leave, saying she can't afford her pieces. Lisa says she'd be surprised by her resources. She sees alien goo dripping from Violinda's bag and points her gun, telling her to tell her what's in the bag. Violinda runs, but Lisa shoots her. The egg falls out and Lisa takes it, only for Harry to attack her from behind. Lisa shoots wildly and Asta catches the egg, which then rolls back to Violinda. Harry tosses Lisa through a skylight. Violinda apologizes to Harry, telling him that he was right and that Goliath did want him to have the egg, that Goliath knew it needed an alien to guide and protect it. One with emotions, like him. Harry asks just who Goliath was. Violinda tells him that he was a man who stepped out of the jungle that she fell in love with. He told her that another alien would come when the time was right. She says he warned her people would be coming for it, asking him to promise to take care of her baby. "I promise," agrees Harry. Over at the skylight, Asta tells Harry that Lisa is gone. VIolinda warns them that they want the egg and won't stop. She tells them to go out the back. They go out the back and find themselves facing off against the two men from before. The men pursue, but are shot by Lisa Casper. She wonders just who they are. One of them has a nametag identifying him as being Alex Ogilvie of the Galvan/Powell Group. She rounds a corner, only to find Harry and Lisa getting into a taxi, which speeds away.

At the pool table, Kate tells D'arcy that she's just now getting to the point where Max can be left home alone. D'arcy says that she can handle the drunks coming through the 59 and a kid can't be that much worse. They discuss whether D'arcy even wants to have a kid, but D'arcy says she'd have to find a guy once, that dating her is like a war zone. Kate tells her she could be a great mom if she wanted to be, that they could be pregnancy buddies if she wanted. Kate tells her that she'd have to give up her freedom, that right now she could just jet off to Paris. D'arcy points out that she won't. Kate points out in return that she doesn't yet actually know for sure if she's pregnant. D'arcy suggests they find out, taking her to a backroom with a machine that dispenses tests, saying they cater to all needs at the 59. Kate tells her she's not sure she's ready for the answer. D'arcy tells her that it'll be there when she's ready.

Harry and Asta are riding an Amtrak back home. It's a two day trip and Harry asks why and Asta explains that she didn't fancy trying to get the egg through airport security. She asks if he even knows if and when it will hatch. He tells her that it doesn't, that normally there are hundreds of eggs, but this is just one. He says that with one his kind mating with a human partner, it could be one year or right now. She asks just what they're supposed to do. He says Goliath wanted him to have the egg, that he died so Harry could have the baby. Asta leaves, saying he's going to get a tea. She asks if he wants anything. He tells her no, then shouts for an ice cream sandwich. He thinks to himself that he went to New York to find an alien like himself, but looking at the egg, he thinks he found something different, a baby contaminated with human emotion, something just like himself. Outside the cabin are blue alien egg drippings.

Surprise![]

At Joe's Diner, Sheriff Mike sits reading one of the mystery novels. Dan asks him just what's going on, that he hasn't turned the page since he came in. He explains how he got the books from Abigail. He thought they'd help him take his mind off stuff, but it's not working. Dan asks him if there's anything he'd like to share with a fellow soldier. Mike tells him he feels stuck, like he's in the middle of something, but not sure which is the right way to go. He says he thinks he made a mistake and maybe put the wrong person behind bars. He says the last time was back in D.C. with Jesse. Dan offers him some free pie. He tells him about his time in Vietnam, doing guard duty. He and his fellow soldiers were telling jokes and pretending they weren't scared when there was an ambush. He just stood there while one of his friends bled out. The medic told him it wasn't his fault, that it was too big a wound. Still, he ran from the guilt for years and almost died from it. Mike asks how you survive something like that and Dan tells him not about that, that any soldier still with them is surviving. He says a soldier has to prevail, "learn to honor Joe." He tells him that Joe is with him him every day, pointing to the name "Joe's Diner" on the menu. He tells him to honor his partner by being the best cop he can be and put the right person behind bars.

At the sheriff's office, Liv's husband John enters, telling her he's been waiting out front for ten minutes. He asks if she forgot he was picking her up. She says it was police stuff, but he looks at her monitor, asking if she's pulling UFOs over for speeding again. She says she's been feeling a little stupid, that she posted the UFO video, but people think it's fake. He tells her to ignore it, but she says it's multiple people. She says someone used a filter to change the UFO to a donut, and he suggests they get some on the way home. She gets a text and tells him she needs ten more minutes. Back on the train, Lisa enters the cabin, fingering the blue goo and telling Harry he should have cleaned up after himself. She raises her gun, saying he's going to give her the egg and tell her where it came from. She makes a move and Harry attacks. She puts up a struggle, displaying martial-arts skills, but she is no match for Harry's alien strength. He shoves her through the window, shattering it. "You..." she realizes as he extends two alien arms. She gets decapitated by another passing train and Harry shoves her to the rails below. Asta enters and sees the chaos as Harry sits back down. She asks just what happened and he tells her he may have killed the bad woman, asking dispassionately if he got the ice cream sandwich.

Back in Patience, Sheriff Mike and Deputy Liv are in Sam Hodges's office in the clinic. Deputy Liv points out that they've been over it many times, asking just what he thinks they've been missing. Mike says they were trying to get in the killer's head before, but it's time to try getting into Sam's, why somebody would want him dead. It's most likely that he witnessed or knew something. He explains that in the novels, the protagonist would hide his case notes in the back of paintings in his office. So he and Liv start examining paintings. They eventually strike pay-dirt - a list of names with the heading "Galvan/Powell."

Harry, Asta and Dan arrive at Harry's cabin. Harry thinks to himself that Patience must be nearer to his planet than New York, that he feels closer to home there. Dan asks Asta if she's going to tell him what's going on, that she's been quiet the whole trip and it makes him nervous when she's quiet. She explains the whole sorry saga of their trip to New York and he comments that he liked it more when she was quiet. He gets out of the truck and congratulates Harry for adopting a baby. Harry tells him not to worry, that it hasn't hatched. If it had, he would know because it would spit acid. Asta comes over, saying it's a relief they have somewhere safe, that they finally have a use for his "stupid bunker." They enter the cabin, only to find Mayor Ben, Kate, Sheriff Mike, Deputy Liv, John and D'arcy Bloom all there and shouting "Surprise!" Mayor Ben wishes Harry a happy birthday. "Speech!" he shouts. He tells them to get out of his house and everyone laughs as inside Harry's bag, the egg begins to hatch.
