He, however, is the lone survivor of the desolation of the Earth by another alien race. He then survives for some 500 years, growing old in his human form, before discovering a time portal by another alien species with takes him back to approximately 33 years before he arrived on Earth. He then takes a new human form, Goliath and settles into New York as an artist, where he begins painting a series of messages for his original self.
Plot summary[]
I am different now. And I do not have to fail. I am not Goliath.
Harry Vanderspeigle realizing that Goliath's failure does not have to be his own, despite Goliath being him from the future, "I Believe in Aliens"
Harry Vanderspeigle witnesses the desolation of the Earth at the hands of an alien race. He survives for many years, lamenting the loss of those whom he had known and loved, particularly Asta Twelvetrees. Eventually, some 500 years later, his human form grows very old and frail. He then discovers a time portal left by another alien race and steps into it. He appears 33 years before a time not long after he had first tried to leave the Earth after having met Asta, in the Tapajas National Forest in Brazil through a strange glowing blue vortex of energy that is the portal's form on the other end. He takes on his alien form. Shortly after he emerges from the portal, a forest ranger on the other side dies by tripping and falling on a rock. He chitters, then reaches down and picks up the man's paintbrush, then absorbs the man's DNA to take on his form.
When the Harry of that time uses his radio to send a message, Goliath responds to it by sending his phone number. At this time, Goliath has been living in New York for several years. He has been working there as an artist. He presents pieces in art shows and paints murals on brick walls around the city, signing them with his name written in his language. According to Internet lore, many people have tried to meet him, but nobody ever has, leading him to become known as the "Ghost of New York."
Goliath uses human DNA to impregnate himself. This causes him to fossilize with an egg growing inside. When Harry and Asta pay a visit to New York, they discover that Goliath is dead and that his wife, Violinda Darvell, has been keeping his egg in hiding. Though at first reluctant, Violinda allows Harry to claim the egg for himself after a woman, Lisa Casper, attempts to attack and steal the egg. She tells Harry to take care of the egg, but whether she is aware that Goliath was Harry from the future is unclear.
Harry and Asta return the egg to Harry's cabin in Patience, Colorado. The egg hatches and the humalien baby within it escapes, and is later captured by government forces known unofficially as the "Men in Black," headed by General McCallister. Later, back at his cabin, Harry reveals to Asta what happened, he having texted 911 attempting to report it to her. She discovers that his cabin contains a large amount of unopened mail, including a package from Violinda. Within it is a book of Goliath's paintings, along with the message "I wanted my baby to have this book so he can get to know his father through his work." The two discover a painting of the day that Harry fought Asta's ex-husband Jimmy, an event that Goliath could not possibly have witnessed as far as they know. She notes that the signal was sent to him and that the murals were made for him, but he was the only that could understand them. "This makes no sense," she realizes. "Unless... you're Goliath."
Through other means, Harry discovers that it is the Greys who are planning to desolate the Earth and, in fact, already had in the alternate timeline in which he traveled back from the past to become Goliath. He eventually discovers the alien baby, who is in fact his own child, being held at General McCallister's black-site. He receives the remainder of Goliath's message, telling him what he already knows, that it is the Greys that are on Earth. Goliath, however, warns him also that the Greys are creating human/alien hybrids in order to better blend into the Earth and that their people have ceded the planet to the Greys. He warns Harry to not kill General McCallister, as he did, as he believes her resources and knowledge may be crucial to saving the Earth.
Appearance[]

Goliath, fossilized in the private room
His alien appearance is the same as that of Harry Vanderspeigle, as he is Harry Vanderspeigle. As a human, he takes on the appearance of a ranger from a National Park in Brazil, a tall man with tanned skin and full facial hair including a goatee and a bald or shaved head. However, after fossilization, his body resumes alien form and appears like stone.
Notes[]
- As with his original form of Harry Vanderspeigle, Goliath assumes a male human form on Earth. As such, this article uses male pronouns to refer to Goliath, despite the original alien species having no genders.
- Goliath's artwork was created by Joe Vaux, known for his work as a storyboard artist an animation director on Family Guy, having previously worked alongside Resident Alien creator and showrunner Chris Sheridan. Both Sheridan and Vaux appeared in Syfy's "Resident Alien After Show" featurette following the release of the episode "Alien Dinner Party," providing details regarding Vaux's work ont he show and even giving names to some of the artwork featured in "An Alien in New York." For the most part, if not entirely, all pieces were ones that had already been created by Vaux prior to Resident Alien even having been created. The painting that was the main focus of Harry's attention was titled "Nostra Smartass." Vaux stated that it was created at a time when there were various Nostradamus predictions in the public mind, leading Vaux to think to himself "Oh, this guy just thought he knew it all," leading him to throw various elements of time and space into the painting.[1] Following the premiere of the episode, prints of the artwork were made available as t-shirts and other merchandise on Joe Vaux's online artist shop.
