Synopsis[]
Harry and Asta get surprise visits. Ben grows suspicious of Mike and Liv's private investigation.
Plot[]
Spy games[]
In a lab, Joseph Rainier tests Harry's alien ball with the aid of his DNA. It seems to respond. Meanwhile, in the Patience Health Clinic, Harry mopes over Heather's betrayal. Asta confronts him in his office, complaining about the 1970s heartbreak song he's been listening to on a loop. She tells him she's sorry, but that they have a lot of patients. He shouts that he doesn't care whether they live or die. She tells him that he might want to keep that inside, then go home and finish his bomb. She tells him that his first patient is Mayor Ben Hawthorne for therapy. He tells her he doesn't care if Ben dies. "Well, that makes two of us," comments Ben, appearing behind.
At the Hawthorne family home, Kate wakes up. She discovers that she is still handcuffed to the bed, as she was the night before, having done so in the hopes that it would protect her from being abducted by the Grey aliens. She reaches for the key, but then drops it, and is forced to try to perform contortions with her foot in the hopes of reaching it. Failing, she makes a phone call. Back at the clinic, Ben tells Harry that there's someone at work that he's having a problem with. "Sheriff Mike," Harry correctly identifies, though Ben tries to deny it at first. He tells Harry that Mike is up to something, that he's lying and sneaking around. "Don't trust anyone!" Harry tells him, saying that you can never truly know how someone feels. He spins a scenario, saying that he could wake up every morning next to Mike, feeding him sunflower seeds, but it could all be a lie. Ben sarcastically thanks him for the image and Harry tells him he only has himself. Ben says that what he means is that he's giving Mike the power in the relationship and that he needs to take his power back. Harry tells him he didn't say that, but Ben tells him he's starting to get him. "Great session," he tells him. Harry shouts at him to turn out the light, then turns the song back on. Asta comes in, shouting that she's pulling the plug. "Not something you want to hear in a doctor's office," comments her biological mother, Mary-Ellen Taylor.
Asta is stunned to see her mother. She tells her she's sorry for how she was when she saw her last, that she wasn't in the best place. She tells her it doesn't matter, asking if she wants to know about her family and her history. She tells her they could grab some food and talk. Asta looks thoughtful. Meanwhile, at the Patience Sheriff's Office, Deputy Liv tells Sheriff Mike that they have a problem, that she used the trick he taught her and that somebody has touched their murder investigation board. He tells her that he thinks it was Mayor Ben, given his recent questions about their movements. She agrees that this is likely, given that he's spying on them right now. Mike tells her that it's fine, that he doesn't have anything, and they'll just tell him they're playing a game. She reminds him that he had said he found another chemist they could talk to about the formula. He asks if she's back on this with him and she agrees, telling him that she doesn't want to let being afraid stop her from doing what's right. She tells him she has a crazy plan to catch Joseph. Mike points out it'll be a lot harder with Ben watching them. "Be a little harder," he amends, as Ben knocks down the blinds, making it very obvious what he's doing.
The worst father ever[]
Harry arrives home in his cabin to unexpectedly find Liza Vanderspeigle, the daughter of the human Harry Vanderspeigle, sitting at the dinner table. "Hello, Dad," she greets him. He tells her it is not a good time for a visit, suggesting she come back when it's warmer and they could throw a ball. "So you want to send me away again," she complains, and he counters that he didn't, that he put her on a nice bus and even gave her his last apple. She shouts that he couldn't wait to get rid of her and tosses a knife at him, which he dodges. He tells her she's being naughty, saying he's going to limit her screentime. She complains that it was freezing, flipping over the table. Witnessing this display of strength, Harry realizes something. She tries to tackle him. "Bridget," he says. This is actually his alien son. "My baby, it's you!" he greets him, telling him he likes his new skin, but he headbutts and then kicks him. He lifts him by the neck and he compliments him on re-creating Liza's clothing. "You're the worst father ever and I hate you," he tells him. Harry asks if he wants him dead, but he lets him down, telling him not yet. He says that he has something else planned, worse than death. When he asks what, he tells him he guesses he'll see and leaves.
D'arcy arrives at the Hawthorne family home and unlocks Kate's handcuff. She thanks her, telling her she has to pee really bad. D'arcy tells her that she's not asking why she was handcuffed to the bed, that it's the mature thing and she wants credits. Kate tells her it's not a sex thing, so it's not weird, but she says that would be the non-weird explanation. Kate tells her that sometimes you just love your bed so much, you don't want to be taken from it. D'arcy gets a weird look on her face. Kate comes back in, saying it's too crazy to talk about, but D'Aarcy tells her that she's the least crazy person she knows in the world. She says that whatever's happening to her might not be so crazy, and that she should stay open.
Harry goes up Max on the sidewalk, greeting him as "Hey, dickhead!" He tries to enlist Max's help in finding Bridget. Max, however, is not into it. He says that it sucks for him, complaining that Harry got him grounded for taking his caldera. He tells Harry that he only ever spends time with him when he wants something, then treats him like he's not even alive. At this, Harry takes back the taser, saying that he is no longer the Alien Tracker. Max tells him to keep it, saying that he doesn't care and he wishes he'd never come to Patience. Meanwhile, at the 59, Asta talks with Mary-Ellen about the information she has on their family. It soon becomes clear, however, that what Mary-Ellen is after is money. She asks for $750 as compensation for getting it all together and then driving up there.
Worse than death[]
Wearing sunglasses, Mayor Ben spies on Mike and Liv from a van outside the restaurant Maya Norte. He takes a phone call. It is Mike, putting on a silly voice and claiming to be calling from Max' school, saying that he's caused a problem at school and they need him to pick him up. Ben points out that Kate works there, but Mike tells him that she said he needs to come too because it's that bad. Ben tells him he'll be right there. He then starts the van, then repeatedly goes forward and backs up, before finally taking off. At the 59, Bridget sneaks inside in his alien form. He then assumes Harry's form and proceeds to make a terrible scene, shouting at D'arcy and calling himself the biggest drunk in town. He shouts about how he sends children away without any snacks. When D'arcy asks what he is doing, he says he drinks alcohol because he is an adult human. She tells him he has to get over Heather, that the Greys are taking Kate too and she needs him to do something. She is then distracted by a call from her mother, as Bridget hits on a random woman at the bar.
Asta discusses the situation with Mary-Ellen with Kayla, telling her that it's hard to understand for someone who's not adopted. She says for most people their life story is like a novel, but hers was torn out of a book and Mary-Ellen has the pages. Kayla tells her it's wrong for Mary-Ellen to sell her the pages. She tells her she will never go away if she pays her. Harry shows up, and Asta asks what happened, that she heard he got banned from Mama Sap's. A brief flashback shows Bridget in Harry's form standing on the porch of Mama Sap's, shouting "The cheese comes from her toes! Stay away!" He thinks to himself that this what Bridget meant by "worse than death. He is going to destroy my life here." Asta asks him what's doing on and he tells her that he hasn't been a strong enough parent.
D'arcy arrives at a hospital to find her mother sitting by a hospital bed containing her father. She asks how he is and she tells her it isn't good, that his heart stopped. She asks what they were even doing in Colorado and she tells her that it was her cousin Louisa's birthday. They get into an argument over whether or not D'arcy remembers her. She takes off to have a drink, telling D'arcy that she could apologize for being late. "Bullshit," comments her father. He tells her that he's the one who should be apologizing to her for telling her to live her life in a different way. She says he must be on some good drugs, but he tells her he once saw one of her World Cup races. He saw how she was fearless, with such bravery. He tells her she's his hero. "I'm your hero?" she asks, incredulous, but he tells her he had things he wanted to do, but he took the safe way, not like her. She asks how he would feel if she didn't have any more races. He tells her she would do something else great. Stunned, but pleased, she takes his hand.
Bait[]
Harry thinks to himself that he liked his baby better when he was sweet and not murder-y. As he continues to prowl the sidewalks, searching for Bridget, he comes upon Sahar. Shocked, he pulls out the taser. She holds up her hands, asking what is wrong with him. He replies that she isn't Max's friend, that she was sent away to girl's prison. "Gifted school," counters Sahar. As they continue to chat, he realizes from her sarcasm that it must actually be her. He tells her she wasn't missed. She asked why he has Max's taser. He tells her that Bridget is back and asking out. Delighted, she asks where he is, that she missed him. Harry thinks to himself that he can use Sahar to lure Bridget back. He tells her that he misses her too, that she can soothe his angry mind. He suggests they find him together. She tells him she'll help him only to keep Bridget safe, but that she won't let him use her as bait.
Asta returns to Mary-Ellen. She hands her a check and Mary-Ellen hands over the file folder. Asta asks if her dad is in there. She tells her that it's only her side, that she never was in touch with his family. Asta suggests she could just tell her who they are and she could go from there. Mary-Ellen tells her that if she's interested in his things, she has a desk he left behind. "Or you could just tell me his name," Asta suggests. She tells her she could write it down, put it in the desk. "And sell it to me?" asks Asta, disgusted. Mary-Ellen replies that it's a nice desk. Asta snatches back the check and shoves the file folder back over. She tells her to forget it. Mary-Ellen says that she thought she wanted to know where she came from, but Asta tells her that now she does. Mary-Ellen asks if she thinks she's better than her, pointing out that Asta gave up a a kid too. Asta replies that she did it for her, whereas Mary-Ellen did it for herself. Mary-Ellen grabs the folder and leaves. Kayla comes over, telling her she's sorry. Asta tells her that she always hated the book Are You My Mother?, that she knew the answer was always going to be no. She says she wants to tell her young self that there are worse answers than "no."
That evening, Sheriff Mike and Deputy Liv pull up outside the lab of the chemist. He tells her to wait there while he goes inside to talk with them. He heads inside, while Joseph walks up to the van, gun drawn. Inside, however, is only a balloon with alien eyes. "Drop it," Deputy Liv warns him, shocking her gun into his back. He drops the gun and Mike emerges from the lab. He laughs, holding up a notebook and asking if it's the one he's looking for. "Yes," he agrees, snatching Deputy Liv's gun from her hands and pointing it at her. Liv comments that his reflexes seem almost non-human. He forces Mike to surrender both the gun and notebook, though not before some comedy of Mike having to throw them because he is unable to kick properly. He asks what the formula is for, but Sheriff Mike only gives him Harry's line about ice cream. He says he'll just go get answers from the chemist, but Mike tells him there isn't one, that they set him up. He says that it's too bad, that he's going to have to kill them for no reason.
Joseph points the gun, only to suddenly be slammed into by a car. From it, Mayor Ben emerges, shouting at them to get in. They do and he takes off like crazy, sending them on a wild ride. Liv says that she can smell blood and Mike suggests putting the air on recirculate, but Ben says that it's not his car, but that of Deborah, the town clerk. "You stole Deborah's car?!" asks Mike and Ben tells him that he borrowed her keys after he tried to ditch him with the stupid Russian accent. He shouts that he made them hire a killer and he killed the killer, so now he's a killer. "Maybe he's not dead," he suggests, saying they have to go back to make sure. He spins the car into reverse, causing both Mike and Liv to possibly lose their lunch, one way or another.
The return of love[]
At Harry's cabin, Harry is using a fan in the hope of spreading Sahar's scent to attract Bridget. He complains that it's taking too long, that he will make Max come over and wrestle her so she can start sweating. She tells him to not to tell Max she's back yet. "I see you committed a crime," he says, but she tells him that she quit the gifted program. She explains that she was average among the students there, that they were older and smart. She says she's never been average, that it's like him: he's smarter than most humans, but on his planet, he's probably really dumb. He tells her he was exceptional there too, thinking to himself that he was a C student at best. Just then, Bridget jumps in through the window. He runs into Sahar's arms. She tells him she really missed him. She hugged him, saying that he was scared, but she's there now. As she cuddles him, Harry pulls out the taser and takes it to his head, causing him to explode in a mass of goo. Sahar shouts she killed him. "We killed him," he tells her. "He started it," he says, but she tells him that even though she doesn't have a child, she knows that not killing it is the main thing. Harry says that Bridget was broken and didn't love him, but she tells him he didn't have to, that he's supposed to love him. He calls it not a good deal, but then one of the blue pieces of goo on the floor starts sliding. It grows and rises up, taking the form of Sheriff Mike. "Molecular regeneration" comments Sahar and Harry says he's very impressed with his baby. Then more of the pieces move, taking on the forms of Asta, Isabelle (wife of the human Harry Vanderspeigle), D'arcy, Ben, Kate and Liv and John. Sahar asks if he never vacuums. "Didn't you miss us?" asks the Isabelle form and Harry tells Sahar to run. He pulls out the taser, telling her that he's got this. He fights off the various forms, as they repeatedly materialize and dematerialize. At one point, one event takes on the form of a pizza delivery guy he once let use the bathroom. Even the octopus 42 gets in on the action. "Why do you have teeth?!" shouts Harry, flinging him by the tentacle.
Mike, Liv and Ben return to the scene of the crime, where they find nothing but a small puddle where Joseph was smacked by the car. "Maybe it just knocked him out," suggests Ben. "Knocked him out of his skin, maybe," comments Mike. Liv says that he was taken up. "To heaven?" asks Ben, while Mike suggests a helicopter with a claw. Liv, however, says it was an alien spaceship. Mike tells her to stop it, but it's clear he's still playing the part, to try to keep things secret from Ben. As he shines a flashlight around, Ben asks her if she really thinks it was aliens. She points out that he hit Joseph going at 50 miles per hour and now he's gone. She continues that there's no footprints, blood trail, and there was never any helicopter noise. "They're real, Ben," she tells him, saying that aliens are real, that they abduct people and they don't remember.
Back at the cabin, Harry squares off against D'arcy, the only one of the Bridget forms remaining. She rushes him, but he succeeds in shocking her into bits. "What is that?" asks Harry, staring at something on the floor. He wonders whose it is, as one of the blue bits gathers around it. It takes the form of Max. He comments that he tried to kill him so many times but doesn't want to anymore. "So stick him in a pod and send him away" suggests the Bridget-Max. Harry tells him he did it for him. "You did it for you," he tells him. Harry says that he had work to do, that the future of the planet depended on him. "I'm a baby, I needed you," he argues. He tells him he thought they were going together, that he needed his father. "I abandoned you," Harry realizes. He says it's just like him with Heather. He tells him that he's sorry. "Because your girlfriend broke up with you?" asks Bridget. "No," he tells him. "What is this?" he wonders, saying that he thought it had gone forever when Heather left. He tells Bridget that he loves him. The Bridget-Max jumps into his arms. He thinks himself that babies do not care what anyone feels, that they only want to be taken care of, as Bridget resumes his alien form.
That evening, Kate again handcuffs herself to the bed. Meanwhile, D'arcy pays a visit to her old flame, Elliot. She tells him she knows it's late, but she wanted to say she was happy for him and his girlfriend. She says that she hopes they have a great life, but she has to go. He asks if she's okay, suggesting she come inside. She, however, tells him that she isn't on anything, it's just her dad is in the hospital and that he had said he was proud of her and said she was going to do something big. She tells him she thinks she knows what it is and if he says her again, she knows he cared about her and she messed it up. She tells him he'll be proud of her too. That morning, Kate wakes up to find that she is no longer handcuffed to the bed. On her note is a message in red ink: "IT'S REAL."
Fragile, handle with care[]
Harry arrives at the Patience Health Clinic and meets Asta. He is carrying a photograph, telling her he brought it for her, that she can put it on her desk. He turns it to show a picture of himself and Bridget in his alien form. She calls it sweet, then immediately stashes it in a drawer. He tells her that he has good news. "I stayed up late last night and I finished the bomb!" he shouts. She calls it great news and he tells her that McCallister will be coming to his cabin to hear his plan. He says that he could use more information about the Greys' ship layout, but he may have enough to proceed. She tells him she's glad and glad that he has Bridget back to. He tells her he thought he was doing what was best for Bridget, but that he was selfish. "It was for me," he admits. She tells him it's not always easy to know. "Like you with Jay," he agrees. She asks why people keep saying that, that she did not have selfish reasons. "No," he says, saying that she made a difficult choice to give Jay away and it was good, but that she's selfish with Jay now. "What?!" asks Asta and he takes the picture and puts it back on the desk, saying it looks so good. He leaves the room, only to find Kate waiting outside. She apologizes for not having an appointment, telling him that she has something in the back of her neck and she needs him to take it out immediately. She shows him and he immediately recognizes it as being a Grey implant.
Harry thinks to himself that given that the Greys are taking Mayor Ben, it is not surprising that they are taking Kate too. He thinks that it's excellent, that he can use her to get intel about the Grey ship. He tells her that she seems upset, asking if she's ever been hypnotized. He takes her into his office and begins a session. He tells her that she's on the ship, asking her to tell him everything she sees. She tells him that they're walking with her. He asks how many doors there are, or if there are guards. "Where is she?" asks Kate. "Let me see her." Harry asks if "she" is a guard or "leader." "There she is," says Kate, "There's my baby." Harry thinks to himself that the Greys took Kate's child and that it would make her angry and sad, so he will make sure she does not remember it when she wakes up. He asks again how many Greys there are and if they have weapons, but Kate continues talking about her baby, how they want her to bond with her. Harry thinks that she is too focused on her baby, but that he understands, that he would be sad if he did not know Bridget existed. He thinks that happiness is not just getting love, but getting to love. "When I snap my fingers, you will wake up, and you will remember everything," he tells her. He counts down from three and snaps his fingers. She sobs and cries out and he comforts her.
Asta returns Jay to her adoptive family home. She tells her she loves her, but that it is the right thing for her. She says that she's loved every second of getting to act like a mom to her, but she skipped over the parts of knowing how. Jay grouses that she's glad she could be part of her learning process, but Asta says she should be with the people who raised her. Jay tells her it would be nice if it were her choice for once, that she's a person who should have a say. She says they never even talked about how she kept this a secret her entire life, that she hired her to be near her and still didn't tell her. Asta admits that she was afraid, that she got everything she wanted, but it was so delicate and fragile that she thought it would break and be gone. "Same," admits Jay. Asta tells her that it was messed up and she was right. "Let's talk about it," she tells her. "Now? No," Jay says, then tells her it's what the rest of their lives are for. Asta smiles and laughs as Jay exits the car, heading to meet her adoptive mom. Back at his cabin, Harry tells McCallister that he even wrote a plan for how to get onto the ship and destroy it, but that she no longer needs it. He tells her he is going to kill the Greys himself. She asks if she should just stay home and watch a ball game. He suggests she come and take pictures, then opens a suitcase, only to reveal that it is completely empty. "Where is it?" she asks and he admits that he doesn't know, that somebody must have snuck in after he was asleep and stolen it. The scene cuts to show the bomb and a manifesto with the title "Plans for Destroying The Greys, Written by a Highly Intelligent Species." Inside the car containing these is D'arcy. She passes a sign reading "Yellowstone National Park."
