Synopsis[]

Harry and Asta team up with an unlikely ally to try to save the Earth.

Plot[]

Searching for something[]

Robert Hutchins, the son of Peter Bach, leads a blue-skinned alien into a cell. The alien pleads with him in his language, but Robert just walks away. The alien finds himself next to a cloaked figure, who tells him "It's okay. Don't worry." He lifts his hood, revealing a blue-skinned face and telling him "I am one of you." He sighs in relief, but says that you can't be too careful, that "they" keep Mantids in these cells. "Yes," agrees the man, lowering his hood. "They do," he agrees, his voice going deep. He lunges into the man and tears into him, tearing off his head. He lifts the cloak to reveal his Mantid form and then lunges down for more.

At Harry Vanderspeigle's cabin, General McCallister asks who would have stolen Harry's bomb that he made to fight the Greys. He tells her that it has to have been Joseph, that he must have snuck in while he was sleeping. General McCallister summarizes the situation: that the Greys could destroy the Earth at any time and if she were to send her forces in, they would just freeze them. She says that it's over, that she can't stop them. Just then, the door opens and she emerges, asking if anyone has seen her tablet. "Oh, there it is," she comments and Harry addresses her as Bridget. "It's... me," comments McCallister and Harry tells her that Bridget is young and still experimenting with his form. Bridget blows a raspberry and leaves the room.

McCallister complains that her father would still be alive if not for Harry's spaceship flying over when she was a child. She tells him that she spent her entire life looking for aliens to kill them all and rid the Earth of them. He tells her that it's his safe space and he's not feeling safe. She says he knows what she means, that he's one of the good ones. He laughs at this, saying that he caught her in a racism. She mutters that it's really over, but he tells her that he just needs to find Joseph and get his bomb back. He tells her it may take a little time, that he travels by portal. "What?" asks McCallister and he explains to her about Grey portal technology. He says that he already explained it to her and that he thinks sometimes she doesn't listen. She tells him not to worry, that she'll find Joseph.

Harry thinks to himself that humans are always searching for something and sometimes it's the strength to tell someone they love that their world is falling apart. At the Hawthorne family household, Ben approaches Kate and sits down next to her. In unison, they each say that they need to tell each other something. Ben apologizes, but Kate tells him to go first. He asks if she's ever had something so crazy something that you have no idea what to do. She tells him that she has. They then share what they know of what they've been going through - being abducted by the Greys and Kate having child taken from her womb.

An unlikely ally[]

D'arcy Bloom arrives at Yellowstone National Park, outside the Sullivan Gravel Company. She records a video log, saying that she might not be able to do many more, but that she's finally there. She says that she may be scared and that she thought she was put on Earth to ski, but maybe it's this. She says if she dies saving everyone, she knows she's there for a reason. She suggests a bronze statue of her might be nice. "It was D'arcy," Asta tells Harry back at his cabin. He protests that it couldn't be her, but she explains that Elliot told her she came to his house and said she was going to do something big so that people would be proud of her. "We have to find her," she tells Harry and just then, the door opens, revealing Joseph Rainier.

"He stole the bomb!" shouts Harry. "What bomb?" asks Joseph, seemingly nonplussed. "Never mind, it was her," agrees Harry. Asta asks what he's doing there and he asks if she wants to drug him again. She asks if he wants to be a dickhead again and he tells her that he doesn't. He holds up the notebook with the formula, demanding that Harry tell him what it does, and that if he says anything about ice cream, he'll know he might be lying. Harry explains that it will allow the Greys to make the Earth uninhabitable for anyone but them. "So, not humans?" asks Joseph, "and not half-humans." Asta asks if he didn't even know what the plan was. He tells her he knew something was up, that the Greys were acting weird and wouldn't make eye contact. Joseph mutters that he can't believe they were going to let him die, that he hasn't had a day off in seven years. Harry tells him it's horrible, that even the Septids get two weeks off a year. The chat a bit about the Greys' terrible health plan, Asta saying that they need to get back on track, that the Greys could destroy the Earth anytime now. "Today, actually," Joseph clarifies, saying that the Greys gave Harry's alien ball to Frank and told him to fill the chamber at Yellowstone with water. Harry tells him they can help him defeat Frank, that he built a bomb and D'arcy stole it. Asta agrees that he could help him find her. He says it may be too late, but she tells him they have to try, that there is a human part of him that cares. She says that Harry gets it. "If you help us, Asta will date you again," he tells him. Asta suggests they just focus on saving the planet, but Joseph agrees "I'm not gonna die for these bastards." At Yellowstone National Park, Frank holds forth the alien ball, the water rising.

At the Hawthorne family home, Ben says that maybe it's good they've found out that aliens are kidnapping them, that it's better to know. He says that they can make a plan and get their daughter back. He says they can be smart about it. He rifles through some drawers and she asks what he's doing. "Covering the house in tinfoil," he tells her. She says that they need help, to perhaps call the Pentagon. She then suggests that they could call his uncle Jim, who works at the State House. "He's a custodian," points out Ben. Max comes in, asking what they're doing. "Oh, God" comments Kate as Ben puts away the tinfoil. "What?" asks Max, but Kate tells him she's just praying, pulling Ben aside. They whisper about the possibility that the Greys could be abducting him as well, saying that they need to check him without him finding out. Ben tells her that there's a metal detector.

At the Grey facility, D'arcy stages a distraction for the Grey-human hybrids. She then sneaks in, following Harry's map, and logs that all that's left is to wait for the portal to open and step onto a spaceship. A portal opens and she steps inside. At the Hawthorne family home, Ben and Kate ambush Max and probe him with the metal detector. When he asks why they're being weird, they claim that the school called and that someone at the school has lice, so they need to check him out. In the woods, Sheriff Mike Thompson and Deputy Liv Baker are out searching, Mike taking the dog Cletus for a walk. Mike tells Liv he doesn't want to hear that their search was a waste of time because Joseph was taken by aliens. She points out that he saw Mayor Ben hit Joseph and that no human man could have walked away from it. He tells her that some people say the most efficient form of transportation is rolling. At the Hawthorne family home, Kate tells Ben that Max does not have a Grey tracking chip. He tells her that they need to get theirs taken out. He says that Harry won't do it, that he told him that his is too close to a nerve, but that he doesn't care, he wants it out. "What about our baby?" asks Kate and Ben tells her they will find a way, but he needs them to be safe. She tells him that it'll be okay, that they'll take care of it. He tells her that he's going to call Dr. Smallwood. Kate tells him to ask her if she can treat lice, that Max's head is filled.

Meeting in the middle[]

At the cabin, Harry, Bridget, Joseph and Asta head out. Asta points out that they don't even know where D'arcy is, but Harry says that he does. He tells Joseph that the plan is for him to portal them to the tunnels underneath Yellowstone, that he will stop them from using his alien ball, then they will climb up a ladder to reach a portal to the spaceship. He says they will portal aboard the trip and blow it up. "And find D'arcy," says Asta, and he tells her they will see how they are doing on time. Joseph opens the portal and Harry tells Asta that she's not going, that it's too dangerous. He tells her he will find her and she can stay and order pizza. He tells her not to follow them. She says they can follow her and runs through the portal. Once inside, Harry says that he has to stop the Greys and then they'll save D'arcy. Frank shows up and Joseph battles him, Asta taking a control device for a portal that Joseph dropped. She climbs the ladder and opens the portal, while Harry calmly asks Joseph if he has another control device, even as Joseph tries to strangle Frank. Joseph tells Harry that Frank has one. Harry grabs it, also taking some money, as Asta goes through the portal upstairs. Harry asks Joseph if he has things and Joseph agrees he does. Harry tells him to keep doing what he's doing. He says they can circle back at the cabin later, calling for Bridget to come on. Asta finds herself aboard the Grey spaceship. She raises her hands as a couple of Greys appear before her. Joseph claims the alien ball. He raises it and stops the water.

On the spaceship, Asta is led into a cell alongside D'arcy. The Mantid growls in a cell nearby. Harry and Bridget arrive through the portal and are instantly met by two Greys. Harry asks calmly if either of them have seen a woman come through. "Never mind, I'll find her," he tells them, grabbing them by their necks and tossing them aside. In the forest, Sheriff Mike rambles about the growth rate of trees. They hear tree branch snapping and pull out their guns, only to be confronted by Detective Lena Torres. They lower their guns. Mike complains that Lena could have been killed, but Lena says he's the one who could have been killed. He asks what she's doing there and she's forced to admit that she's been tracking him because she's been worried about him. He thanks her for caring, saying that they've been tracking someone too. He says it's about all he should say, but Liv continues that they're tracking an alien, possibly a human-alien hybrid. Lena says she's joking and Liv tells her she never jokes about aliens. Lena says that there's no such thing, that aliens are disinformation spread by the government to cover up their gene-splicing program. Mike says that somebody gets it, that if he didn't think she was perfect before, she is now. Liv excuses herself, saying that she'll take Cletus for a walk. Mike and Lena then share a heart-to-heart, Mike telling her he really cares about her and he'd like to say it more often. Lena tells him she knows she can come on strong, saying she doesn't expect him to be the same way, but she'd like for him to meet her in the middle. He tells her the middle would be a good place to start.

In the Grey cell, Asta tells D'arcy that she could have told her about her dad, that she would have been there for her. D'arcy says she shouldn't have to. She tells her she doesn't want her to look at her like she's a weight she's holding. She says it's no wonder she grew up thinking she had to take care of people, that she's Asta's villain origin story. Asta tells her she knows she's a caretaker because sometimes she doesn't want to look at her own stuff, but sometimes taking care of others is taking care of herself. She says it gives her everything she needs. D'arcy tells her she loves her and that it's all her fault. Asta tells her they'll be okay. At the Hawthorne family home, Ben tells Kate that his tracking chip is out, that for the first time in his life, he feels free. He tells her that Dr. Smallwood is ready for her, but she says she's not doing it. She tells him she was desperate to take it out, but after being hypnotized and seeing her baby, she just can't. She says they've been taking him his whole life and she wants him to have peace, but the chip is her only connection to their daughter. She tells him she can't leave her up there. He says that he can't let them keep taking her, but she tells him she wants them to. She says she's going to fight and not stop till they get their baby back. He hugs her and they go to bed.

Mitochondrial memory[]

Asta and D'arcy have now been stuck in the Grey cells for hours. They discuss how to get out, when a deep voice tells them "There is no escape." D'arcy calls it terrifying, turning to the masked Mantid and saying that she loves the cloak. "Come over to my side," he suggests. Asta asks why they would do this. "So I can eat you," he suggests. He laughs, saying he'll start with D'arcy. Then Harry arrives, with Bridget on his shoulder. He opens their cell, freeing them. "Good luck finding lunch," D'arcy tells the Mantid, saying she hates his cloak. Harry asks where the bomb is and D'arcy tells him that the Greys took it. They argue a bit about Harry not doing his job, Asta stopping them and saying they need to find their way out. Harry tells her that he and Bridget need to find the bomb and just then a cell door opens, revealing a Grey. He pushes a red button, sounding an alarm. "That could complicate things," comments Harry. Just then, Robert Hutchins appears, knocking the Grey away. "Robert, my son!" cheers Harry and Robert tells him he isn't his son, asking what he's doing there. Harry says that he thought he might see him there, saying that they came to blow up the ship. Robert is astonished that he was going to do this even though he knew he was there. Harry says he's twisting his words. Robert tells them that the alarm disengages the portals up there, but that there's a better way out. He says he knows where their ships are. "Follow me," he says. He tells Harry what he did was messed up, Harry shouting that he did not call or write.

Late that night, a portal opens in front of Harry's cabin, revealing Joseph. He is confronted by a military convoy and from it emerges Peter Bach, wearing the robotic suit created by General McCallister. Inside one of the vans, McCallister tells her people to be careful, that they need Joseph alive. "Two days ago, you said you wanted him dead and you were going to eat lunch out of his skull," points out David Logan. "Alive," insists McCallister. Outside, Joseph asks if he's supposed to be scared about Peter being back. Peter steps forward, grabbing him and tossing him to the ground. He gets up, saying he should have killed him better the first time. He rushes him and it's as if he charged a wall, as his knocked back to the ground. Peter grabs him by the neck. Suddenly, he has flashes of the events that happened underground, when Joseph shot at him. Inside, one of McCallister's agents monitors brain activity, telling McCallister she might want to take a look. Outside, Peter asks Joseph where his son is. "What did he just say?" asks McCallister as Peter deposits Joseph in the van. "Give me me son! Where is he?!" he shouts. David says it could be cellular memories, a mitochondrial storage, which could have implications for dementia research. "Kill him," declares McCallister and the soldiers outside start firing, but Peter's suit has a shield that deflects the bullets. The shots just bounce off. He crushes one of the armored cars and takes off.

On the Grey ship, Asta asks what kind of alien was in the jail cell and D'arcy asks how he knew his name. Robert tells her he was a Mantid, that they're shapeshifters and you shouldn't talk to them or even get close, that they get inside your head. Harry tells Robert he remembers that he did text him, asking if he was on the ship and saying that he might want to bounce. They find themselves confronted by a group of Greys holding what look like wands. Harry tells them all to hide while he and Bridget handle things. "Hello, Greys!" he shouts, indicating Bridget and telling them he got five new teeth that day. "Go get 'em!" he declares and he and Bridget charge forward, the others watching discreetly as scenes of violence play out off-screen. Meanwhile, D'arcy spots Kate taking off running in a different direction. She follows. Harry tells Asta and Robert to come out, Bridget appearing clutching a Grey foot in his mouth. Asta asks where D'arcy is. Robert says they have to get to the launch bay, but Asta says she isn't leaving without D'arcy. Harry tells her that he and Bridget have to find the bomb and that he will find D'arcy too. He tells her she has to get to safety, closing the door and shouting at her to go.

Off his pie[]

D'arcy finds Kate. They hug and Kate asks what she's doing there, if the Greys have been abducting her too. She tells her she abducted herself, that it's a long story. She tells her she knows a way out and they hear footsteps. They hide until there is a sound of a door shutting and Kate tells D'arcy that she has to help her, explaining about her abducted baby. She tells her she knows where they keep the babies. "Yeah," agrees D'arcy, telling her that she's with her. Kate thanks her, saying she won't remember anything if they make it out. They enter the Grey nursery. It is filled with cradles, each having a monitor above with a holographic image of the baby's mothers speaking to them, playing peekaboo games and telling them how much they love them. D'arcy calls it messed up, saying she thought it was just a sci-fi cliche. They hide as a Grey appears and takes one of the babies. Meanwhile, Asta wonders what's taking so long. "Screw this," she declares, telling Robert she's going to find D'arcy herself. She takes off. In the nursery, Kate finally tracks the sound of her own voice and finds her baby. She races over to her, only to be rushed by a group of Greys. She tries to fight them off, shouting at D'arcy to run. The Greys place a restraining collar around her neck, then send her up and away. She shouts, pleading for them to give her her baby. One of the Greys turns. Kate's baby is gone and so is D'arcy. D'arcy takes off running through the corridors.

General McCallister confronts Joseph, telling him that she should just kill him for infiltrating her base and murdering her team. She says he's quite the dangerous man, except not actually a man. He tells her that he just destroyed the Greys' Yellowstone plan and they're going to kill him anyway. He tells her to do it first, but she says she can't, that he has something she wants. "What?" he asks. "A portal," she tells him. On the Grey ship, Asta finds D'arcy, racing with the baby. D'arcy shouts at her to run. They reach the Grey vessel, just as the door is closing. "You're leaving without us?!" asks Asta, incredulously, and Robert tells her that he told him to not shut the door. Robert exits the ship, saying that there's nothing there for him, that he'll try to stop the Greys and they should go. Asta asks Harry where Bridget is. He tells her that he doesn't want to talk about Bridget, that Bridget is gone and they have to leave. "You're holding a baby," Asta points out to D'arcy. She calls it a long story. They take off through a tunnel, just narrowly making it through a closing door. "At least we made it off the ship," comments D'arcy. "Except it's not a ship," says Asta. Turning, D'arcy sees what she does through the vessel's window: they have just escaped a hidden base on the moon and there is a Grey spaceship firing at them. Asta asks what the plan is and Harry tells her that if they can make it to Earth's atmosphere, they may turn back to avoid detection. D'arcy asks what happens if they don't and he tells her "Either we kill them, or they kill us."

Mike and Lena are in their respective vehicles on the county line between Patience and Jessup. Lena tells him that meeting her in the middle was just a figure of speech. He says he's about three feet on her side, so he's gone above and beyond. She suggests that if he finds his alien, he can come all the way to Jessup to tell her. He gets a call from a woman telling him that someone reported an explosion at the old school off 146. "Might be those kids again," she says and he tells her he's nearby, so he'll investigate. He suggests dinner to Lena and they agree to meet in Jessup. They kiss, him telling her he'll call her later. Meanwhile, Asta, Harry and Dan are all sitting together at Joe's Diner. Asta comments that she's been on a spaceship and so now Paris doesn't seem quite as big a priority. Dan tells her that Paris is still worth it. He tells Harry that he may have given him a hard time about not taking care of Asta in the past, but that he saved her life and he'll never forget it. He shouts out that there is a new rule: that Harry Vanderspeigle gets free pie whenever he wants it. Asta points out that Harry never pays anyway and he says it was the gesture. She tells Harry she's sorry about Bridget, that it has to be the hardest thing in the world. He claims not to care, saying that he deals with death all the time as a doctor. He tells her he has to go to the clinic and that he'll probably see death there too. She tells him not to blame himself, that he did everything he could. Dan sets some pie before him. He has a bite, then spits it out and leaves. Asta says that she knows now he's upset and Dan tells her it's probably for the best, that he'd go out of business if he had to give him free pie.

That someone might be you[]

Harry thinks to himself that there is a joke on his planet: "What is the best way to cloak a ship above Earth? You do not need to because humans are afraid to look up." He chuckles that it is funnier in his language. At the Patience's Sheriff Office, Liv receives a note reading "Call for Liv: 'Meet me on the trail to Perkins' Mine.'" As Sheriff Mike heads for the old school, Harry thinks to himself that he's discovered that humans can actually be very brave, that his people risk their lives constantly, but aren't afraid of death. Humans do so despite being afraid. At the Hawthorne family home, Ben brings Kate some tea, asking her if her neck is still sore. She tells him she's fine. He asks if she doesn't remember anything and she tells him she doesn't. D'arcy approaches their door, holding her baby, She looks around, then knocks. McCallister opens a portal and steps through it, Harry thinking that sometimes humans are wiling to risk it all because they think there is a better life somewhere else. On the trail to Perkin's Mine, Deputy Liv meets Peter Bach. Meanwhile, Sheriff Mike reaches the old high school. He finds a mysterious metallic object in the ground outside. He enters, shining a flashlight. He hears footsteps and is ambushed by a Grey alien, whom he knocks to the ground. "Holy shit," he realizes, shining the flashlight.

Sahar and Max bike up to Harry's cabin. "This is stupid," complains Max, but Sahar tells him that Harry is is buddy and that buddies have fights then make up. She tells him that Harry has been good for him. "Fine," groans Max, as Harry's narration states that perhaps what humans are really searching for is another human who is willing to risk their life for something or someone they care about, for someone who may be in trouble. Max and Sahar walk up to the cabin door and Sahar knocks. The door opens and she tells Harry that Max has something to say to him. She nudges Max over. He stares and screams in horror. What he sees is not Harry's alien form, but that of a Mantid. Harry is with Bridget in the Grey facility. He thinks to himself that "someday that someone might be you." "This is some bullshit!" he shouts through his prison window. "Bullshit!" agrees Bridget.

  • This episode is dedicated in memory of Kenneth "Kenny" Frost. Frost served as a cultural consultant from the Southern Ute tribe for the first two seasons of Resident Alien.[1]
  • In this episode, D'arcy records a video log in which she states that she can't stress enough that "It is a small A after the D, not a capital one." This is inconsistent with almost all previous material released for the series, including Syfy's own website, though more recent articles released for the series do use this form of capitalization.
