Character overview[]
Lena Torres is a detective based in Jessup, a neighboring city of Patience, Colorado. When the body of Tanner Corrington turns up in a hot tub at a motel on the edge of Patience, Patience Mayor Ben Hawthorne calls the Jessup police department to report a murder, not wanting more negative publicity for Patience. As the hot tub sits on the border and the body is within Jessup, Ben believes that Jessup legally has jurisdiction. Lena Torres then arrives in Patience, trying to claim dominion over the investigation, but ends up butting heads with Patience's sheriff, Mike Thompson, who wants to investigate the case himself. Later, however, after the situation is resolved, the two end up striking up a romantic relationship, encouraged by Mike's deputy, Liv Baker.
Ultimately, however, the relationship goes south, largely due to Mike's archaic views regarding the roles of men and women in relationships. He is annoyed when Lena pays for dinner and later sets up a vacation for them, entirely paid by her. Sensing that Mike is not comfortable with this, Lena ends the romance, telling Mike that she has to set an example for her son and that she can't change who she is.
Despite this, however, Sheriff Mike comes to realize that he actually does have deep feelings for Lena and that he has potentially made a mistake. A conversation with Dan Twelvetrees helps him to see that his behavior has been influenced by the traditionalist values of his father, Lewis, and that it isn't too late to change. He then agrees to Lena's proposal that the two of them meet in the middle and they start over.
