Synopsis[]
In an attempt to gather information on the Grey Aliens, Harry puts Asta in harm's way.
Plot[]
Not a team player[]
A woman is outside for a late night jog, a dog chasing after her. Suddenly, time stops. Inside a house across the street, a man descends from a beam of light back inside. This is Mayor Ben Hawthorne, being returned from another abduction by the Greys. It does not go quite smoothly, but he is not disturbed. That morning, Kate wakes up to find Ben next to her. She asks him how he slept and he tells her it was great, though he did roll off the bed again. She tells him it's better than sleepwalking and ending up outside. He says it's freezing this morning. She asks how he knows that. He tells her he doesn't know.
One week later, Harry wakes up in the morning. He puts on a suit, drinks some coffee and heads out to work. He is now working at General McCallister's secret underground alien research base. Scarfing down pizza, he takes an express train to a Montana underground facility. He narrates on how on his planet, he was alone, though when he hatched, he was greeted by the mewling of hundreds of siblings. They all preferred solitude and killed each other, but it is different on Earth. In the office, a man brings him a folder. Staring at the papers inside, he tells him that it is garbage and to go back to his desk. He suggests he take a break, that he'll do it, thinking to himself that if these are the Earth's top thinkers, everyone's dead. General McCallister complains that output has crawled to a stop, that he keeps taking everyone's jobs. She and one of her subordinates point out that they still don't know why the Greys are there.
Harry tells them that last week, he saved everyone. A flashback shows that his idea of saving everyone was accidentally activating an alien weapon and only narrowly stopping it by pounding on it. McCallister tells him that he needs to fall in line, that he's part of a team. The subordinate mouths something unkind at him. Meanwhile, back in Patience, Asta arrives home and wakes up D'arcy. She compliments her on making her coffee and D'arcy tells her that she's building up goodwill, that she's on a late shift next week. Asta gets the paper, which features an unflattering story about D'arcy ditching the skiing tournament. She pleads with D'arcy not to look at it, but D'arcy acts like she's not bothered. She tells Asta that thinking she was losing her threw her, but that she's different now. Asta says that she's proud. She warns her, however, that she's going to lock her door if she keeps coming home at 4 A.M.
Alien rules[]
Sheriff Mike Thompson is with Detective Lena Torres at Joe's Diner. She suggests he meet her son. She pays the bill for the meal and tells him she's off to work, kissing him. She greets Deputy Liv on the way out. Mike complains to Liv about Lena having paid and Liv sarcastically agrees that he should be "so angry." She asks just why he should be angry and he tells her it's not the natural order of things, that men pay and women eat. He says it goes back to caveman times. Liv calls it 200 million years of misinformation and shows him a CCTV still. He tells her not there, that there are cameras everywhere. He says they'll look at later, but she says she doesn't want to, that she just wants to check the van for fingerprints. He tells her that there's no way, that whoever's watching them is well-funded and has drones everywhere, indicating a mustard stain on the window. He tells her to trust no one.
At the sheriff's office, the grey-human hybrid Joseph Rainier sips coffee. A woman named Val hands him a bag, telling him that someone found it near a bus stop. He opens it and extracts a set of clothes and a notebook, containing handwritten notes that appear to have been written by Robert Hutchins, the son of the Alien Tracker Peter Bach. Just then, Mike and Liv arrive. Mike asks what he has and he tells him that he'll go through and see who it belongs to. Mike takes the notebook, telling him he's not there to do clerical work and that Deputy Liv will process it. Mike tells him that he has a gut feeling something's going down and to keep an eye out for anything suspicious. Joseph agrees that if anyone's up to something, he'll know it.
At the Patience Health Clinic, D'arcy shows Asta a cushion reading "Cat Mom," but Asta tells her that she already told her they're not getting a cat. Harry arrives at Asta asks where he's been, that his shift started an hour ago. He complains that it's General McCallister's fault for making him work late. Just then, Joseph arrives, saying he's looking for Harry. Ellen inserts herself, telling him she's the one he's looking for, that she's broken six laws since this morning. Harry asks what he's doing there and he tells him he lives there now, that he figured he'd settle in till he figured out what he was up to. He freezes time, telling Harry that he was supposed to leave on the ship they provided, but that he's still there. He asks why and Harry quips that he doesn't like public transportation. He threatens to tell everyone that he's a Grey, but Joseph says that it's against the Galactic Federation's charter, that no alien can reveal themselves or another alien being to a non-alien. Harry gives him the finger and Joseph tells him he will figure out what he's doing there. They trade barbs for a bit and then Joseph threatens Asta by implication. He unfreezes time and shakes Asta's hand, then tells everyone he'll let them get back to work. D'arcy teases Asta about Joseph liking her.
Planning[]
That night, Kate wakes up in the middle of the night. She gasps, seeing an owl staring at her from right outside the window. That morning, she tells Ben that it's not the first time she's seen it and that she's getting new blinds. He protests, saying that having an owl stare at you is good luck. She asks why and he admits he made it up to save money on blinds. Meanwhile, Harry thinks to himself that if he's going to defeat Joseph, he needs to work alone. He therefore got a co-worker to the general he was sick. He arrives at the clinic to find McCallister waiting for him in an examination room. She tells him that he needs to come to work, that he needs to analyze chatter and to take the HR seminar. He tells her he has better than chatter, explaining about Joseph. "That's our mole!" realizes McCallister. Harry explains that he is a Grey hybrid. He tells her that he's been watching Joseph and taking photos. She tells him that they need to find out what the Greys are up to, that she'll assemble a team to grab Joseph. He protests, saying that they'll find out what they are up to. He tells her he'll deal with Joseph himself, that he has a plan. However, in his head, he thinks that he does not have a plan.
In Joe's Diner, Sahar meets up with Max. She tells him that she was at the comic book store and that the conspiracy kids there think that the Alien Tracker was murdered. Max tells her that those kids don't know what they're talking about, that she's being paranoid. She, however, suggests that he spend time with them, make some new friends. He asks if she doesn't want to be his friend anymore, but she tells him she is his friend and she protected him, that she didn't tell them the Alien Tracker's death was his fault. He asks how this is and she says that he sold him out to Harry and Harry killed him. She tells him they have to go to Harry's cabin and sniff around.
At The 59, Sheriff Mike meets with Deputy Liv. He asks her what the emergency is and she says she has to tell him something, but that she wants to be careful in case they're being watched. She takes him to a secluded area where loud music is playing. She then has a shouted conversation in which she tells him that the duffel bag belongs to the Alien Tracker's son, though with the noise of the music, he can barely understand what he's saying. She tells him that she found the name of the son's therapist, who was murdered the night before. He agrees that they have to get the van.
At Joe's Diner, Asta tells D'arcy and Kayla that she can't ask Joseph out, that she isn't ready to date. D'arcy tells her she's more than ready. Harry arrives and they continue their conversation, Harry asking if it's girl talk. Asta explains that D'arcy and Kayla want her to go on a date with Joseph. He immediately protests, saying that men ask women out. Kayla asks if he's ever even been on a date and D'arcy says that he has and he kisses like a goat. Harry thinks to himself that Asta could get information from Joseph, saying that he changed his mind. Asta agrees that Joseph is kind of cute.
Alien activities[]
Mike arrives at the Ute Reservation, where they find the parents of Liv's husband, John. Mike tells them he's there to meet with their daughter-in-law and see the van, but they claim to have no idea what he's talking about. They claim not to even know the barn that they're standing in front of. Just then, John and Liv arrive. "You said you didn't know them!" protests Mike and Liv tells him not to take it personally, that they don't trust outsiders. They make some quips about the government. Back at the Hawthorne family home, Ben finds Kate hanging the blinds, noting she started without him. He drinks from a mug with a picture of a fetus. Confused, she asks about it, and he explains that it's Max, that he kept having an image in his head, and figured it must be Max's ultrasound. Kate has a flash of her own child that was abducted by the Greys and comes over faint. Ben notices a strange bracelet on her hand, which Kate claims to have gotten from an antique market. Both of them feel sick.
At home, Harry thinks to himself that he works alone and is the real hero, like Superman. Max and Sahar arrive and Sahar tells Max to keep Harry busy while she looks around. Max tells him he needs to tell him what happened to the Alien Tracker. "The old guy?" asks Harry, claiming that his son put him in a home. Max tells him that he needs to tell him the truth, asking if he killed him. Harry tells him that he did not kill him, but lies that he did not even come. "Let's go," Sahar tells Harry, claiming that needing to use the bathroom was a false alarm. Max tells Sahar that Harry said the Alien Tracker never came, but she asks how this is if she found what she did, showing him the shock prod that Peter Bach had been using. Max is stunned that Harry lied to him. Sahar tells him that Harry is a bad alien. She says it's time they got backup, that she'll put out some feelers to the kids at the comic book store.
On the reservation, Mike and Liv investigate the van. She dusts for fingerprints and succeeds in finding one. Back at the clinic, Harry gives Asta a makeup container which secretly contains a listening device to spy on her date. She tells him that she's not the nose-powdering type, but he tells her to take it on her date and ask Joseph lots of questions. Asta goes on her date at a restaurant called Chez Laurent. Joseph tells Asta he was surprised she asked him out. She admits to being nervous, as well as being divorced. He tells her he doesn't date much either, claiming that he moves around a lot. She tells him that she moved away for a while too, and that sometimes she feels like two people in one. He says that it's a perfect way to put it. He asks her to tell him about Harry and she says that she's not going to talk about work when she hasn't even finished her first drink.
At home, Harry thinks to himself that his alliance with McCallister is working well, that her delivering military surveillance equipment to his house is easier than buying it online. However, when he activates it, he hears not Asta and Joseph, but Judy Cooper. Asta left the makeup at home and Judy is secretly using her bathtub, her cat Kevin there with her. Harry sneaks in and confronts her. He tries to grab the makeup case, but is spotted by Judy. He asks what she's doing there, and she claims to be making "Judy soup." He pleads with her to stop and she suggests they keep it between them, that Asta and D'arcy don't know she uses their bathtub. He agrees he will, if she keeps his being there a secret too. She agrees her lips are sealed. Just then, D'arcy arrives. Judy tries to sneak out, but is revealed by her cat meowing. When D'arcy asks what she's doing there, she claims that the cat wanted to see her new place and they decided to take a bath while they were there. She rats out Harry as well. Harry goes to the restaurant. When Joseph leaves to go to the restroom, he goes over to Asta, saying that he forgot to give her her good luck hug. He hugs her and slips the surveillance device in her bag.
D'arcy's discovery[]
Sahar pays a visit to the Hawthorne home, asking if Max is there. Kate invites her in, asking if she wants to eat with them. Sahar refuses, asking Max where he was, that he was supposed to meet her at the comic book store and find recruits. He tells her again that he doesn't want to be friends with them. He says their group is fine with just the two of them, but she tells him that two isn't a group, it's a couple. She says that more people is better because you never know when you might lose someone. He asks who they're going to lose. She tells him that it's her, that she's going away, that the tested into a gifted program in California. Choked up, he pleads that she can't move away. She apologizes for not telling him sooner, saying that she thought if he had new friends to hang out with, he wouldn't care if she left. He tells her that she's the only real friend he ever had that didn't make him feel like a freak. She tells him he's not a freak, he's special and that now that the Alien Tracker is dead, he's the only one who can identify aliens, that he has a unique gift. He asks if she's saying he's the new Alien Tracker. "I am the one! I am the Alien Tracker!" he declares.
At Joe's Diner, Kate sits with Kayla and her sister, Rachel. She tells them she's not getting much sleep lately because of the owl outside the window of her home. Both of them are suddenly very troubled, telling her that for their people owls are taboo, a messenger of death. "What?!" asks Kate, startled, and Kayla backpedals, saying that she should be fine, that they're in Colorado and there are owls flying everywhere there. Dan arrives with her order and senses the mood at the table. He asks what's going on, if there's something wrong with the food, and Kayla tells Dan about the owl. He pulls some cedar of his pocket, telling Kate to take it and burn it in every room of her house, using a match. He tells her that they usually use sage or sweetgrass, but this will offer her more protection, that she needs it. Kayla tells her she'll be fine if she just burns the cedar. Kate asks if she can come over and help. "No, no, no, no, no, no," she protests, as Dan scoots away.
Harry arrives back at his cabin to find D'arcy, who tells him he has three seconds to explain why he's listening in on Asta's date, or she'll smash his equipment. He tells her that if she breaks it, she buys it, and she topples the contents. He tells her the world is going to end and it will be her fault. She asks what he's talking about. "Joseph is a Grey alien!" he shouts and she asks how he could possibly let her go on a date with him. He tells her she's a bad friend for breaking the radio as she calls Asta's phone, pleading for her to pick up. Harry tells her not to worry, that Joseph won't hurt her in public. She tells him that they just left the restaurant, but that they're headed there to the apartment right now. Harry asks if she's tracking Asta, pointing out that she's doing the same thing as him. She's says it's only creepy when he does it. He follows after her, asking if he can get a ride, but she tells him no.
Superheroes and sidekicks[]
Back at the apartment, Asta shows Joseph a photo of her and Dan. He asks about her mother and she tells him she wasn't around. D'arcy arrives, winded. "Are you okay?" asks Asta and she pretends to be sick. She tells Joseph she should be alone with Asta. Joseph gets up, saying he should probably go. He thanks Asta for a lovely evening. The second he's gone, D'arcy reveals she's perfectly fine, telling Asta that she had to get rid of Joseph. Asta points out that she wanted her to go on the date and she tells Asta to sit down, suggesting she drink some more wine. She lets Harry in. "Joseph is a Grey alien here to destroy the planet," he tells Asta. "And you let me go on a date with him?" asks Asta, incredulous. She and D"Arcy stare at him, and he asks them to say something. "Such a bad alien!" cries D'arcy, starting to hit him, but Asta stops her. She tells her that she should know that Harry is not emotionally evolved enough to distinguish between right and wrong. "But I still want to hit him," D'arcy says. Asta tells Harry that even if he wants to save the Earth, you don't do that to someone you care about. He says he had no choice, but she tells him to just go. She tells D'arcy she's more mad at herself than Harry, that after ditching Jimmy, she chose the asshole again. D'arcy says she can't blame herself, that it's just bad luck.
That evening, Harry thinks to himself that he used to prefer working alone, but as a human, you're never really alone. Asta goes to bed, while D'arcy has more to drink. At the Hawthornes, Max finds a note under the door. It's on a piece of stationery reading "From the Desk of Sahar Karimi" and reads "I'm sorry I have to leave. I believe in you. Your Friend, Sahar". Harry thinks to himself that this is why humans struggle with difficult decisions. Lowering the blinds, Kate tells Ben that she thinks they should sell their house. Harry thinks that some decisions are so big, they affect the entire planet, like his. He wonders what would happen if you would choose what is best for one person over the entire planet, that if he is a superhero, Asta is his kryptonite.
Harry is next shown sitting by Asta's bed. She startles awake, telling him he scared her. She turns on the light, asking if he's crying. He tells her he came to kill her, but that he could not do it, but if he could, it would be gentle and painless. He asks her what he should do, that he could have gotten information from Joseph to save the planet, but he had to stop because of her. He says he always will. She tells him she doesn't understand and he says he cares about her too much. He asks why he cannot just kill her and breaks down sobbing. He says he's afraid of her, but she tells him she knows he would never kill her and that she's going to help him and not let him fail his mission. "You'll kill yourself?" he asks, hugging her and calling her a good friend. "No," she tells him. She tells him that one of the best things about being human is choice and that she's going to go on another date with Joseph. He tells her she cannot, that the Grey aliens are very dangerous. She reiterates that she chooses, and that they'll do it together. Harry thinks to himself that the problem with working as a team is that sometimes people can hold you back, but that the best superheroes have sidekicks. He muses that if you have the right person on your team, they don't hold you back, they lift you up.
