Synopsis[]

Asta and D'arcy take a drastic step in an attempt to get Harry back on track.

Plot[]

Smitten with a bird[]

Joseph Rainier stands in front of a lake. He walks into it, clutching Harry Vanderspeigle's alien ball. He uses it to make the water bubble, gasping intensely as water pours from him. He drops it into the water and bursts, becoming water himself. He reappears, steps forward and picks it up. From behind him, a pair of Grey aliens appear. They tell him that the ball is organic and can only be controlled by Harry. "Bring him to us," they tell him. The outline of their spaceship appears in the sky above.

Heather, the Blue Avian, has taken Harry out for a flight. The two of them soar above New York, Harry commenting on how the humans look like ants. "Our life is better than yours in every way!" shouts Heather, as Harry thinks that attraction is simple physics. He states that he and Heather feel a strong pull. Back in Patience, they discover a new pet shop and release a bunch of birds. In Harry's cabin, they watch a documentary about bird dances. Harry then strips off his shirt and performs a dance himself. Harry thinks to himself that he doesn't even mind that Heather never showers and just splashes in a kiddie pool.

At Joe's Diner, Asta asks Dan if he's seen Harry, that she hasn't been able to reach him. He tells her he hasn't for a couple days and it's been a good thing, that he actually gets to sell his pies for a change. "You expecting Jay's mom?" he asks her, seeing her sitting at a table. Asta goes to her, explaining that Jay had asked if she could stay with her for a while. She tells her that she didn't say yes, that she wouldn't without talking to her first, not after what she did before. She hands Asta some medications, and also a retainer that Jay never remembers to never wear at night. She says that Jay already told her. Asta asks if there's something going on and she tells her that Jay is just mad that she told her she can't blow off college to explore the world. Asta agrees she totally backed her up and she tells her Jay has a new girlfriend and it's all about that, but she can do it after she gets a degree. She tells her she'd rather see her with her while she's waiting for acceptance letters. "I'm happy she has you," she tells her, warning her to not let her borrow her phone charger.

At the Patience Health Clinic, Harry sings love songs about Heather and thoroughly confuses Ellen Cho by actually being nice to her for once. Asta tells him she's been trying to reach him for three days. He tells her that he's been having so much intercourse with Heather and she should lock her car doors. She starts to tell him that Sheriff Mike and Deputy Liv have been researching the Alien Tracker's van, then realizes what he just told her. Moving along, she tells him that Mike and Liv are going to realize he was with Peter Bach before he died, but Harry calls it impossible, saying that he used wet wipes to clean it. He asks her where the van is and if it's locked. She tells him he's not having sex in the van. He says he forgot to clean her car. She calls it gross and he tells her to chill out and be more like Heather, pulling out a feather and sniffing it. She says she's stressed about the end of the world, but she's happy he's happy. She says he can have a girlfriend and work on the mission, that life is about balance. He tells her he will visit Mike and Liv and make sure they know nothing. He suggests that she invite him and Heather to dinner so she can meet her. She agrees.

"A roast chick... beef"[]

At the Patience Sheriff's Office, Mike and Liv discover the notebook that they found in the secret compartment in Peter Bach's van. The contents appear to be some sort of extremely advanced chemical formula. They agree that they don't know what it is, but that it's important enough to kill over. Harry enters, claiming he was checking up on Deputy Fred and thought he'd see his old friends. As they make small talk, he thinks that they have not arrested him yet and he is therefore safe. Mike comments that he must know chemistry, showing him the formula. "Where did you get this?" he asks and Mike asks why he's asking, what it is. Harry thinks to himself that it is a compound with an alien element, one used by the Greys. He tells Mike, however, that it's sugar. When Mike points out that it's rather long for sugar, Harry claims that it's a special sugar, the kind used to make chocolate sauce that traps ice cream in a hard shell. Liv tells Mike that Harry is joking. "Making a joke and definitely not memorizing this formula with my eyes," agrees Harry. He thinks to himself that the formula may be the key to the Greys' plan.

At Asta and D'arcy's apartment, D'arcy asks why they are supporting Harry dating Heather when they need him to save the Earth. Asta says that he can do both, that they should let him have some fun. D'arcy says that they aren't having fun, that they're choosing to be single till they finish the mission. There is a knock on the door and Harry and Heather arrive. "What is that smell?" asks Heather and D'arcy describes the dinner in detail, finishing by saying that made a roast chick... beef. It is, however, too late. "How dare you?" asks Harry, asking if she cooked a bird carcass. Asta apologizes, telling her that they don't normally have bird guests and weren't thinking. "It's an honest mistake," Heather tells her and Harry pulls out some birdseed, saying it's lucky they brought their own food. Asta comments that she hears they've been having a lot of fun. "I love your car. Smells like pine," agrees Heather. Asta notes that the portal is fixed, so she probably has to get back to work soon. "We'll be going pretty soon," agrees Heather. "We?" asks Asta and Harry tells her that they're both leaving, that they're moving to her home planet. Asta asks about his mission and Heather asks if she means the one about stopping the Greys. "She knows?!" asks Asta, incredulous, and Harry says that they don't keep secrets from one another like humans do. Heather says that they tell each other everything, bringing up personal stuff about Harry and Asta.

D'arcy asks what Harry mentioned about him, but Heather says that Harry didn't say anything about her, but did mention that Mayor Ben had been abducted by the Greys. Asta and D'arcy are both shocked by this, but Harry tells them not to worry, that they bring him back every time and he remembers nothing. Asta asks why he didn't tell them and he says it's privileged information between a patient and a doctor and an Avian. D'arcy says that there's no way he can leave now, that he has to stay and get rid of the Greys. He says that he doesn't, that he just needs to give General McCallister what she needs to defeat them. Heather passes Harry a note and they kiss. She caws at him and he gobbles like a turkey. They start full-on making out and Asta and D'arcy are left stunned and staring. Heather says she has to go the bathroom, and Harry agrees he will chaperone her "like a human male in a false show of protection." "What the hell?!" asks Asta after they are gone and D'arcy says they have to tell Ben. Asta, however, tells her that they can't, that it'll expose Harry. She pleads with D'arcy to promise not to tell him. She agrees, as more bird noises come from the bathroom. D'arcy says that she's going to use the gym.

Liv's woes[]

At the Hawthorne family home, Kate finds Max and Ben in front of a model suspension bridge. She asks what they're up to and Ben says that he's helping Max to build a model suspension bridge for his science project. He calls it a good way to spend time together, but Kate points out that he's not actually helping him, that Max is just standing there reading a comic book. Kate tells him to get to work. He complains that he had a project which Ben threw out, and Ben says that said "project" was literally a bag of moldy bread. Kate tells Max to make his own project, one that makes more effort than watching something rot. Max threatens her with a website where you can rate teachers, but she calls his bluff, saying she already has the worst rating in the school. Ben tells Kate he didn't want Max to be picked on for bringing in moldy bread, but she tells him they'd just think he was cool for not caring about science class, unless they're nerds. He asks if she's ever considered taking a sabbatical from teaching. "Every day," she tells him.

That evening, D'arcy has a nightmare about the camping trip in which Ben was first abducted. In the morning, she tells D'arcy that if Harry can have a bird over, she should be allowed to have a cat. Asta points out that she's not allergic to birds. "At least cats don't have sex in your car," she shoots back. Asta says that Goliath was clear that Harry and General McCallister have to save the Earth together, that they can't leave. D'arcy says they have to break up him and Heather. Asta says that Harry is like a teenager in heat and they have to get rid of her. D'Aarcy asks how big a snake they need. Asta says they have to talk with Heather and make her break up with him. "Snake as backup," agrees D'arcy. The doorbell rings and Asta asks D'arcy what she would think of Jay moving in. She asks who's at the door and Asta tells her that it's a funny story, that Jay asked to move in and she got excited and agreed to it without talking to her first. D'arcy opens the door. "Hey, Jay, we're getting a cat," she tells her.

Sheriff Mike and Deputy Liv emerge from the ice cream shop, where Mike got an ice cream to test Harry's chocolate assertion. They discover Deputy Liv's vehicle, covered in balloons with cartoony alien faces. On the windshield is a note reading "PATIENCE ISN'T SAFE WITH DEPUTY 'BEAM-ME-UP' BAKER IN CHARGE!" Mike takes it, telling her not to listen to it, that they're mistaken if they think she's in charge. He says he found a chemistry professor and they can check with him to see if he recognizes the formula. She shakes her head and tells him no. He asks what she means and she says that the note is right, that people are in danger because of her. She says that she led people to their death, like Dr. Beasley. She continues that if she hadn't contacted Peter, he never would have come and would still be alive, that everyone she involves gets hurt. She tells him he's better handling it on his own, getting in the car and taking off over his protests. He shouts that he's not going to save her any of the ice cream.

As Mike walks off, he is approached by Detective Lena Torres. He asks if everything's okay. She tells him to tell her, that she kept tabs on the woman whose prints he asked her to run and saw she was murdered. She says she knew he would just say he was fine if she called, or not pick up at all. He agrees he deserves that and she tells him that where there's smoke, there's fire. She asks if he knows what he's getting himself into. He tells her he appreciates it, but she doesn't have to worry. She says she would for any colleague. He asks how she and her son are. "Okay," she tells him.

Girl code[]

Somewhere underground in Montana, General McCallister recalls dancing to music with her father, Howard. Her phone rings, interrupting her reminisces. "What do you want? Where is he?" she asks the person on the other end of the line. Harry thinks to himself that he has obtained most components he needs for his model caldera, but still needs the Grey element. He raids a Grey spaceship, obtaining the compound. In the 59, Kate tells Deputy Liv that she saw the alien documentary she was in and that it was fascinating, especially the stuff about the owls. She asks if it's real and Liv tells her that it is, that a lot of experiencers see owls. They believe them to be false memories planted to cover up an alien abduction. She asks if Kate is seeing owls, but Kate waves it off, claiming she's only curious. She asks how someone would know for sure and Liv tells her that owls aren't the only signs, that you might have weird bruising, lost time you can't account for and that some people even find tiny chips in their skin, tracking devices. She tells her that she can always talk to her if she ever feels like she's been abducted. She invites her to an alien experiencer support group in Braddock. Kate tells her she's good.

In McCallister's underground facility, McCallister confronts Harry, telling him he can't just go in whenever he likes, that there's protocol. He tells her that he got the final ingredient for the formula. He makes a pun and she asks if it's all a joke to him. He tells her that he'll get to work, then makes a "henway" joke. She tells him that he might think it's funny, but that the whole world is depending on him. As they continue their conversation, David Logan monitors from a room where Peter Bach is seated on a chair, hooked up to various devices. "Here we go," he comments, apologizing and saying that he knows Peter can't hear him because his brain doesn't work. "But let's see what I can do about your vision," he suggests, making some adjustments. On the monitor, Harry's alien form is revealed.

Asta and D'arcy meet with Heather at the 59. They tell her they feel bad about the other night. Heather agrees she wasn't at her best herself. She says that she was nervous meeting the two people closest to Harry, that she's not great with other women. Asta tells her that they want to talk to her about something on Earth they call girl code, which is that women have to be honest with each other. D'arcy says it's when they warn each other that they're about to make a huge mistake, like her with Harry. Asta tells her that Harry is asking her to help him out, but she has to break the rules, and soon she'll be on the run. They get a bit sidetracked discussing Earth culture, but Asta says that what they're saying is whether or not she wants to spend the rest of her life with someone she barely knows. D'arcy asks if she's ever seen his other friends, that he only had one and he killed him and ate him. "That is not true!" shouts Harry, who has been hiding at a table nearby. He says that he did not murder 42, that a dog did and he only ate him because it was his last wish. "What are you doing here?" asks Asta and Heather says they told them that they don't keep secrets. Asta tells Harry that they only said mean things because they care for him. Harry just laughs at this, saying that Asta never helps anyone for them, only for her. He says that she just goes around looking for people to help to get them to love her, that it's perfect D'arcy showed up. He continues that D'arcy cannot give love back, only take and take. He says that D'arcy is incapable of caring about anyone but herself, something which Heather agrees with. Harry tells them they will never know a love like Heather and him, saying he feels sorry for both of them. He and Heather leave, saying they're going to be around somewhere not with hate.

The Greys' machinations[]

Back in his cabin, Harry thinks to himself that chemistry is a delicate balance and that when you mess with it, things explode. He thinks this first happened with Asta and D'arcy and now it is happening to him and Asta. He thinks that he doesn't care, that the formula is complete and he will be leaving soon. There is a knock on the door. He thinks it must be Asta, coming to apologize, but instead it is Max. "I need your help," he tells him. "Cool volcano," he comments, entering. Harry tells him that it's not a volcano, that it is a caldera. He says he should know since he was there at Yellowstone. Max grabs the beaker, asking if it's what makes it blow up. Harry tells him not to touch that and then Heather appears, telling him to come to bed. "Hey, you're the alien lady from the diner," comments Max. "You told him who I am?" asks Heather, incredulous, and Harry explains about Max's ability. She and Max tell him to shoo, but Max complains that the science fair is today, saying that Harry has to help him make a project. Max drags him out, saying he needs to get out before his girlfriend pecks him. "That turned me on," she says and they retreat into Harry's room. When he comes out, he curses, discovering Max has taken his model caldera.

At school, Max sets it up, assisted by Leo and Mari. He has also made a cardboard sign reading "WHAT IS A CALDERA?", Harry's beaker sitting next to it. Kate tells the kids to get ready, that the judges are going to be coming around. "Check out Max's project!" Ben comments to her. She asks if he did it all by himself. He lies and says that he did, even as Harry bursts into the school, thinking that Max does not know what he's done, that even he does not know the effects of the Grey's compound and it could put everyone in danger. "Or worse, ruin my caldera. I finally got the color just right." Inside the science fair auditorium, one of the judges poses to Max the question on his board - "What is a caldera?" He says that this is the project, that she has to guess. "Tell me," he says. "You tell me," she demands, but he says it's not a good enough answer. Harry enters, telling Kate that Max stole the caldera from him. "Of course he did," agrees Kate. Seeing Harry, Max suggests "How about a demonstration?" He pours the compound into the caldera. Harry thinks to himself that he is too late. As the caldera hisses and bubbles, he runs outside and pulls the fire alarm. Ben apologizes, saying they were about to see his caldera. Kate tells him he stole it and Max says that he knows he's grounded. Kate asks if they're bad parents and Ben agrees they're not great. While everyone flees, Harry sneaks back to the science fair room. Peeking through the door, he wonders if this is all the Grey's compound does - create smoke. He enters and dons a gas mask. As he steps forward, he sees the contents of the room floating in the air. "Gravity," he realizes, thinking to himself that the Greys cannot survive in Earth's gravity. They do not want to destroy the Earth, but change its atmosphere and gravitational pull so only they can survive and have it to themselves.

That evening, D'arcy has another nightmare about the camping trip. She sees Ben in a beam of light. In the morning, in Joe's Diner, Asta calls it terrifying dream. "Not a dream, remember?" D'arcy tells her. She says that Deputy Liv said that she saw a UFO that night and the Greys were there and took Ben. She says that she doesn't think she was supposed to remember, but that perhaps something Harry said made the memory come back. Asta calls it horrible. D'arcy agrees, pointing out the fact that she did nothing. Asta says that she was ten, but D'arcy says that she should have known, and might have if she weren't so focused on herself. She is annoyed when Asta seems to agree with this assessment. Asta tries to backpedal and say that Harry was just talking nonsense, but then gets annoyed in turn when D'arcy seems to agree with Harry's assessment of her. D'arcy points out that the plan was to break up Harry and Heather, not the two of them. She tells Asta, however, that if she doesn't tell Ben then Harry will definitely be right about her. She says that she wasn't there for Ben, but can be now. Asta argues that she can't, that Ben has a family and is happy. She says that sometimes when we try to help people, it's not really for them.

Sheriff Mike is out walking with groceries when he hears a clattering noise. He draws his gun, saying that he knows it's Joseph. There is a sound of footsteps, but no reply. Meanwhile, at home, Kate thinks to herself about what Liv told her about abductions and tracking chips. She feels around her body, discovering a strange lump and markings on the back of her neck. That evening, D'arcy pays a visit to Ben. The two have a strange conversation in which she claims to simply be checking in on a friend and all but tells him without saying directly that he was abducted by aliens. She brings up the camping trip, saying that he was abducted by aliens, but then claiming that she's not actually saying it. In his cabin, Harry strums his guitar and sings terrible love songs. Asta arrives home at her and D'arcy's apartment, cleaning up after a sleeping Jay. While out walking, Heather is accosted by Joseph. He tells her that the Greys know where her family lives. He tells her that she will do what they say or they'll kill them all. He asks if she understands. She nods and he uncovers her mouth. He tells her that she now works for the Greys, that she is going to help them get Harry's alien DNA. She asks why he is doing this. He tells her they do what they want and once she gets them what they need, she is to leave the planet without Harry and never see him again, or they will kill him too. In his cabin, Harry finishes his song, as Heather is telling Joseph "okay."
