Season 3 is the third season of the Syfy television series Resident Alien. The third season, which has 8 episodes, premiered on February 14, 2024. The news of the renewal came just ahead of the premiere of the second half of the show's second season. The series was reported to continue to be a strong ratings performer for Syfy, having reached nearly 11 million viewers across all airings.[2]
Originally ordered for 12 episodes, the episode order was reduced to 8 in the middle of the writers' room for the season. As such, the writers were forced to compact the story they had written for 12 episodes into only 8, necessitating some things being packed in. Nevertheless, showrunner Chris Sheridan felt they were able to do a good job of packing in a lot of information in a brief span, but having it be entertaining.[3]
On June 18, 2024, it was officially announced the program had been renewed for fourth season with a reduced budget. The program will move to USA Network for its fourth season.[4] USA Network, which like Syfy is owned by NBC Universal, previously aired some episodes of the first season in repeats and Chris Sheridan actually originally pitched the series to USA Network.[5]
A Blu-ray release of the season was announced on August 3, 2024, to be officially released on August 27, 2024. It is not clear at this time if this will be accompanied by a DVD release.[6]

Production and release history[]
On August 12, 2022, it was reported by Syfy that creator and showrunner Chris Sheridan had begun work on mapping out the arc for the third season. He stated that the third season would be "more like the first season but with two extra episodes" and that it would not be developed as a two-part season as with Season 2. He further stated that while he already had some ideas as to what the third season would be, he has new ideas now that they have gotten through the second season with a lot of stuff he had not envisioned at all.[8]
On September 26, 2022, a couple days ahead of the second season finale, show star Alan Tudyk (Harry Vanderspeigle) shared a filming update on the third season, confirming that production on the season would kick up in January 2023, though he had yet to see any scripts for the third season.[9]
On September 28, 2022, the day of the second season finale, Parade interviewed Chris Sheridan, who shared certain tidbits regarding Season 3. He stated among, other things, that he hoped to have Enver Gjokaj, who appears in the second season as Joseph Rainier, a Grey alien in disguise, appear multiple times in the third season. He stated that while the series will not move away from the town story, there will likely be more alien content. He promised that more alien species would be seen, but did not say which. He also revealed that the alien baby, Bridget, would be seen again, stating that it is too cute not to be back. Regarding D'arcy Bloom, he stated that she will likely not be spending too much to competitive skiing as she will be too busy saving the world. He was tight-lipped on the possibility of revealing if any other characters would learn Harry's secret. When asked about Deputy Liv Baker, however, he stated that if she were to learn his identity, she would be incredibly emotional as it would validate everything she has ever believed about aliens, then stand on a large rock and shout 'I told you, you mother$%@@&!'”[10]
Season 3 was originally ordered for 12 episodes. On November 15, 2022, Deadline reported that Syfy had chosen to reduce the episode order for the third season from 12 to 8. No reason was given for the reduction in order, though ratings for the second half of Season 2 were notably down from those of the first half.[11]
Season 3 was reported to begin filming on January 30, 2023. [12] Members of the show's cast shared photos from the set.[13]
More photos from the set were shared on February 27, 2023, along with the news that the new season is expected to release sometime in 2023. It was stated that, as expected, the new season will see the alien Harry Vanderspeigle working with General McCallister and that D'arcy's knowing Harry's secret "changes everything" going into Season 3.[14]
Filming in the field in Ladysmith, Canada was reported to have begun taking place in the final week on March 2023.[15] On April 4, filming was reported to have wrapped, with additional filming taking place in Fort Langley as well. On-set filming was announced as being slated to wrap around May 2, with a few months of production work before the season's release in late summer or early fall.[16]
In July 2023, it was reported that show creator Peter Hogan would appear in a cameo role in the final episode of the season.[17]
As of late September 2023, a release date for the season has still yet to be announced. It is believed that the release of the season may have been delayed due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, though no official statement has been made by Syfy.[18] The series will apparently premiere sometime in 2024.[19]
On January 10, 2024, it was officially announced by Syfy that Season 3 would premiere on February 14, 2024. A trailer for the new season was released on that date.[1]
