Synopsis[]

Asta tells Dan about the shooting; Harry learns what it takes to be a good friend.

Plot[]

The prisoner[]

David Logan watches activity at General McCallister's blacksite. McCallister returns with food, asking what he has for her on their mole. He tells her that he has nothing and she says he'd better find something because whoever it is will happily kill them both to get the alien ball. David zeroes in a man who is pleading with one of the guards, telling him he shouldn't be in there. The man tells the guard that he's not an alien, that the aliens are the ones who took him. McCallister tells Logan that it's nothing and to keep looking. Back at the facility, however, the guard communicates telepathically to the man. "You remember. You're not supposed to remember," he tells him. He says that if he wants to stay alive to not forget that he belongs to them. He slams the man against the wall and exits the cell.

In the Patience Health Clinic, Asta Twelvetrees and Ellen Cho discuss the death of Gerard Hundemer. Ellen tries to claim a scarf that he left as her own, but Asta won't have it. Harry then arrives and Asta tells him he has to sign Gerard's death certificate. Harry says that Gerard was old and riddled with disease, but claims to be surprised. Secretly, however, he thinks to himself that he killed Gerard and that he did not mind him, that Gerard promised him the milk in his refrigerator. He tells Asta that he is going to go look for the alien baby, asking her if she wants to come. "No thanks," she tells him, and he wonders why she won't even look at him.

At the Hawthorne residence, Ben offers Kate coffee but she tells him that she can't have caffeine because she's pregnant. Max arrives, saying that he just signed up for band at school. However, when he tells them he's playing the drums and they have to pay for them, they tell him that there's no way, that they can't have noise like that in the house. When he asks why, they excuse it as him getting a visit from his cousin Frank after Ben very nearly spills the beans on Kate's pregnancy. She tells him that it's a rule that you're not supposed to tell anyone about a pregnancy this early, but he says he didn't know that.

Needing space[]

Harry thinks to himself, still wondering why Asta is mad at him. He thinks that humans are sometimes quiet when they're upset but that Asta cannot be upset because he has not even told her about the other alien race that is hiding on Earth. He thinks to himself that he needs to find the alien baby so that he can get the rest of Goliath's message. He thinks the baby will be easy to track, then realizes that the baby might have taken form, it being a hybrid baby and therefore already knowing how to fit in on Earth.

Back in the secret government RV, Sahar struggles to deal with the alien baby. Despite her best efforts, she has not been able to toilet train him and the smell is awful. In Joe's Diner, Asta chats with D'arcy about how Jay was sitting waiting for her and she missed her birthday dinner. She says Jay was upset and had every right to be, that she keeps messing things up with her. She calls herself a horrible person, but D'arcy tells her that she isn't, that she is sweet and caring and she was only distracted because she had to kill a guy and bury his body. "Which was really awful," sighs D'arcy and Asta asks if she is okay. D'arcy tells her that she had sex with Elliot. Asta congratulates her, but D'arcy says that she's just dragging another guy into her mess, and this time it's dead bodies. Asta tells her that she's not dragging him into anything, that he chased her. She says it's easier when it was just her stuff. They agree that Corrington was a bad guy and D'arcy leaves.

Dan arrives with a burger, telling Asta that if she sees Harry to tell him that he owes him for pie. She tells him that contrary popular belief the two of them are not Bert and Ernie and he should collect from him himself. "Sorry I asked," replies Dan and Asta tells him that she's sorry, that it's just that she needs space from Harry right now. He asks her to tell him what's going on, saying that it looks like she has the weight of the world on her shoulders. She tells him she can deal with it. He asks if she wants him to send Harry home without supper the next time he comes in and she says that he's responsible for half his sales, that he can take his money, she just doesn't want him taking up her time.

Asta meets with Detective Lena Torres of the Jessup PD, who tells her that some of her people found Sam Hodges's medical records in the back of Tanner Corrington's car and they're trying to make the connection. Asta acts surprised and claims to have never seen him before the autopsy. Lena is dubious based on Asta seeming to display a flash of recognition, but asks if she sees anything that connects all of the patients in the records together. She says that she doesn't know them well, that they were all Sam's house calls, rather than people who actually came to the clinic.

The real alien[]

Harry is sitting at Joe's Diner, thinking about the fact that he still hasn't been able to find the alien baby. Seeing Max Hawthorne walk through the door, he decides to try to use him to help. He tells him that he has a secret, that there is another alien in Patience and he needs him to help him look for it. Max tells him that he'll do it if he buys him a drum set. Harry tells him it's too expensive, so Max suggests that he pay him to do chores. Harry agrees that they have a deal.

Back in the Sheriff's office, Sheriff Mike Thompson complains about the food in Patience to Deputy Liv Baker. Lena Torres arrives, revealing an evidence bag with a wallet from one of the hit men they're searching for, who may still be in town. Based on where the wallet was found, they realize that the hit men could be hiding out along an old trail system. At Harry's cabin, Max does chores, including scrubbing the floors, serving Harry milk and giving him a back massage, then eventually pounding him in the back with a hammer when the first massage is barely felt by him.

From their hideout, David Logan and General McCallister monitor activity at her black-site. Logan wonders why Ethan Stone, the supposed alien, is just doing nothing but sitting around doing crossword puzzles. He tells McCallister that he's been monitoring Internet chatter on events in Patience since they took Ethan. He describes a series of unusual events, including an octopus taken from a Japanese restaurant, and tells McCallister that he thinks the real alien might still be in Patience.

Max returns home and gets his drum set and starts playing, loudly. Kate wants to know where he got it and he tells her that the music store delivered it and she must not have heard them deliver it because she was on the treadmill. She says that they told him he couldn't have a drum set and he points out that what they said was that they told him they wouldn't pay for it, so he paid for it myself with the money he got from his job. "What job?" ask Kate. Kate then goes to Harry, asking if he gave Max money. He agrees that he did, asking what the problem is. She tells him that the only problem is that there is now a drum set in her living room. He replies that this is only a problem if you do not like drums. He agrees that he gave Max money for chores and Kate asks why she's only just now hearing about this, asking Asta if she knew. Harry claims that he thought she already knew, saying that Max came to him and said they were poor. He tells her to not be ashamed, that they can sell the drums for food. Kate says it's a lie, suggesting he check in with them first. She then says she's dealing with a child with honesty issues. She then tells Asta she's glad she ran into her, saying that she needs to make sure that the pregnancy isn't a false positive.

Best friends[]

D'arcy considers Patience's ski slope. She surprises her one-time coach with her arrival, giving him a hug. He calls her "the ghost of D'arcy Bloom," saying that he kept missing her at Thanksgiving. She gets some praise from some fans who have posters of her and they do a photo. The coach asks just what she's doing there and she tells him that she doesn't really know where to start and came to clear her head. She says that she fell and he replies that everyone falls and the question is what you do next. He tells her it's never too late for a comeback and that perhaps if she finds one thing the rest will follow. D'arcy sighs and stares at the slope.

Harry and Max are sitting together at a table outside. Max tells Harry he got in trouble and suggests that he have Asta help him instead. He tells Max that she isn't talking to him at the moment. He points out a girl walking on crutches, saying she could be the alien. "Nope," says Max, without even looking. When Harry calls him on this, he tells him that "if it's a girl, it's not him." "How did you know it's a him?" wonders Harry. Harry is forced to admit that he lied, saying that he promised Sahar he wouldn't tell and she's his friend. "I am your friend," replies Harry and Max argues that Sahar is is best friend. Harry says that the baby eats meat and that Sahar will be tasty, so Max needs to tell him where the baby is right now.

Somewhere in the mountains, General McCallister removes a bag covering the head of Ethan Stone. "You people are crazy," he complains, seeing the drop below him. She pulls out a switchblade and cuts away his bindings. She tells him to not do anything stupid, handing him the alien ball. She asks him to tell her how his people use it. He backs up, holding out the ball and telling her to stay back, that it's an alien laser. He tells her not to move or that he'll blast her. She chuckles. "Shit," she curses. "You really are just a stupid human." She tells him that it's a pool ball. She takes it and tosses it away. "This..." she says, pulling out the real alien ball, "...is alien technology." She hands it to him, warning him to not let go of it. She pushes him off the cliff. She finds him on the ground, rather bloodied, but very much alive. She takes the alien ball. "I guess it works for everyone," she comments, saying that he may be worthless, but the ball isn't.

The cover-up[]

At the Patience Health Clinic, Asta gets a visit from Liv Baker. Liv tells her that she's been looking at the medical records and has been thinking of speaking with the families of the deceased. She says that the problem is that they could clam up if she brings them into the station, but Asta is a nurse, so they might talk if they talked to them together in the clinic. Asta is skeptical, but Liv reminds her of her aunt Cathy, saying that if something nefarious led to her death, she would want to know, that they deserve to know. Asta agrees. Meanwhile, out in the woods, Sheriff Mike and Detective Lena are conducting a search, Mike using Cletus as a search-dog. Mike says that he thinks Cletus has an advantage with his stubby legs, but Lena says they might not even need dogs with the way the wallet smelled. The two of them bond over a shared friend in D.C. and then Cletus barks, seemingly having picked up a scent. At Joe's Diner, Asta and Liv conduct their interviews with the family members. They discover a consistent thread: that every one of those Sam was treating had a rash on their hands and feet and that they had things like cancer or nerve issues. They realize that the symptoms are consistent with heavy metal poisoning, poison found in the water at Hawthorne Creek, and that somebody was covering it up.

In the woods, Max brings Harry to the secret government RV. At the same time, they have a near brush with Sheriff Mike and Detective Lena. They finally arrive at the RV, Harry shouting at Sahar that the baby belongs to him. Sahar tells Max that the only surprise is that she's somehow disappointed in him, that she should have expected less. He tells her he's sorry, that he thought the baby was going to eat her face off. Harry tries to attract the baby with his calls, but he stays with Sahar, who tells Harry that he feels safe with her. Harry replies that he's safer with him, then threatens to send the baby to the ice wind desert. Sahar then shouts for the baby to run. Harry tries to chase after, but with no success and the baby gets run over by D'arcy Bloom. She gets out of the car to check on him, but seemingly unharmed, he runs off again before she can even see him. "What the hell?" she wonders, staring at her broken headlight.

Back at the RV, Sahar asks Max if he knows what a best friend is, telling him it's someone you can share your biggest secrets with. He tells her he's sorry. Harry returns. "See what you did?" asks Max, saying that the baby is gone and Sahar doesn't like him, that it's why he has no friends. Harry replies that Asta is his friend and Max points out that Asta won't even talk to him. "And now Sahar won't talk to me," he despairs. Sahar tells him that she will, that he made a mistake, but that friends forgive, plus it's against her religion to hold a grudge. Harry wonders to himself if this is why Asta won't talk to him, because he's a bad friend.

The weight[]

At the Patience Sheriff's Office, they discuss the situation. They agree that things are just about wrapped up and all that's needed now is just to figure out how exactly Corrington was involved. Sheriff Mike and Detective Lena then have a more-than-friendly chat and Liv comments to Cletus that Mike was flirting. At Joe's Diner, Asta asks Dan for a chat. He tells her that he's in the middle of something, but then seeing her face, he drops what he's doing. He tells everyone to clear out and Asta reveals to him that she killed Corrington. He tells her that she was protecting Harry. She asks how she's supposed to get through it. He tells her that he doesn't talk much about the war but that he killed people and he's not proud of it, but that he had to, that it's what he was trained for. He was trained to do it over and over without feeling anything, but the truth is that it's supposed to feel bad. He tells her that it means she still has compassion and empathy, she still has her soul. She says that she can't go on like this forever, but he tells her she doesn't have to, that he'll carry some of the guilt, that it'll be a little less for each of them if they share the weight.

General McCallister returns with provisions for David Logan. He tells her he still has nothing on the mole. She tells him that she has to go on a solo mission and that he was right about Ethan, that he's not an alien. "You didn't kill him, did you?" he asks and she replies that she didn't, that they're not monsters. Somewhere in Albuquerque, a man tells a badly strung-out Ethan to take his medicine. At the 59, Kate tells Ben that she took a blood test and she isn't pregnant. She tells him she's sorry, that she knows how much he wanted to have another baby. He admits that he's actually kind of happy, that he wasn't looking forward to 3 A.M. feedings. They celebrate with a drink. D'arcy then shares a toast with Asta, telling her that she's going to be doing the hard pack tournament.

Harry comes in, telling Asta that he's been looking for her everywhere. He asks her for a seat alone, saying he needs to tell her something and she's not going to like it. He explains that his people aren't coming because there is another alien race on Earth who are dangerous, that it was part of Goliath's message the night of the party. She asks why he didn't tell her then and he says it's because he's a bad friend. He tells her that he wants to be a good friend. She says it's not good news, but thanks him for sharing, that she knows it was hard for him, but friends tell each other the truth and trust each other. Harry thinks to himself that humans have discovered that there is strength in numbers, but that everybody needs a friend, especially when they are in danger. A woman enters the bar and approaches D'arcy Bloom. "Hey. Is this a place where a girl can get a shot of Jeremiah weed?" asks General McCallister.
